Intel Q8300 to 4790K or wait...

I know the grafix card i have now is being under utilised at the moment, but i have around £500 for a new mobo, cpu and ram.
Im thinking of getting the MSI Z97 Gaming 5, 16Gb Ram 2400Mhz and the 4790K

Im just not sure if i should wait though as i have heard that there will be new cpus out this year with a new chipset X99 i believe. My question is should i wait and save or should i just buy now.

My current spec is:

Asus P5KPL-AM
Intel Q8300
Nvidia GTX 780
4Gb ram 800Mhz
 
with those specs i'd upgrade now tbh
x99 will also be a good bit more expensive because it'll use ddr4
 
i know it will be expensive but im still saving so hopefully depending on what comes out and how much i would be able to buy it, just dont want to miss out on 6 or 8 cores or something plus with DDR4 coming out my stuff will be outdated by end of year

it will in no way be outdated with the x99/drr4 release
do you actually need a 6/8 core cpu?
what do you use your system for?
 
mostly gaming with a little video editing here and there. the reason why im considering waiting is because im expecting a performance increase with the new 6/8 cores and DDR4 and with the new consoles having more cores im thinking it would be beneficial for me to get a cpu with more cores now rather than later because i keep my builds for a long time as you can see
 
You might as well wait, I know the waiting game is never a good thing but the next big change is only around the Corner, Broadwell 14nm.

Z77, 87 and 97 are all pretty much the same thing but Z107/Broadwell will bring with it some interesting things :)
 
I say upgrade. Waiting is pointless because there will always be something newer and better just a few months around the corner. Haswell-E is what's coming out next and it's going to be expensive too with DDR4 memory. Your rig is pretty dated and if you're bottlenecking your GPU then there's no reason not to upgrade. The 4790K was a disappointment only in the sense that Intel hyped it with 5 gig overclocks from sea to shining sea. Turns out you're only gonna get 4.7 with solid cooling. But so what? A 4790K at 4.7 is still a bad ass CPU and a huge upgrade over your Core 2.

So you could wait for Haswell-E but then Broadwell will only be a few months away......but then you might as well wait for Broadwell-E as it'll only be a few months away.......but then Skylake will only be a few months away so you might as well wait for it......ad nauseum.

I have a general rule that unless something is just a couple weeks away, buy what you need/want when you need/want it. Otherwise you'll drive yourself bat shit crazy trying to figure out if you should wait on this or that. ;)

People look at what he has in a his rig. That 780 is wasted with that CPU. Broadwell won't be a significant performance increase, neither will be x99 or DDR4.
Nobody wins the waiting game, Broadwell isn't just around the corner, upgrade.
 
ok so maybe i might not wait, but should i actually get the 4690k or the 4790k as i said i mostly game and do a little editing here and there or would that money be better spent elsewhere?

i5 will fully suffice if you don't plan to go into any heavy editing anytime soon. The performance difference in games is pretty much not noticeable.

No aggression intended. I just don't like to use smileys a whole lot which apparently makes replies a little bit less friendly.
Broadwell will be available by the end of the year most likely, that's 6 months of the GPU being bottlenecked for a 10% performance increase and probably even less in games. There's really no need to wait for intel at the moment, Skylake will be the next significant update and that's still a long time away.

It's not the lack of smileys it's the general sentence structure, Just comes out as quite aggressive, Might be a language barrier/colloquial thing :)

I think that depends on your budget. Im of the belief that you should buy as much power as you can afford. If you can swing the extra $100 of the i7, I think it would be worth it to go ahead and get it. In gaming, the HT wont really make any real difference but could come in handy in some other applications.

Also, the i5 is clocked a lot lower than the i7 out of the box so I wonder if its like AMD chips and are lower binned so you might not get higher overclocks out of it than you would the i7.

So bottom line, if you can afford the i7 without having to sacrifice elsewhere then I think its worth it. If I actually go thru with my threatened platform swap, Im going for the i7 even though all I do is game......and stream porn.
 
I personally have taken the leap from Q8300 to 4790k (well when it eventually gets delivered lol) but have chosen a Asus ROG Maximus VII Hero board to host the new chip, and also a Corsair H100i for keeping the new chip nice and cool :D

SSD's are really cheap at moment, and if you look around you can find some really good bargains.
 
do you know when the 4790k is going to be in stock? Its like taking ages for peeps to stock it, just seen an article and X99 will be getting launched in September hopefully the 4790k will be in stock before then or else 6 core i goooooo!!!!
