Intel E8400, Q6600 & HD7970 Gaming Performance

I posted one (well, Alpen found it for me haha) where they paired up the Q6600 with the GTX 660. Made for very interesting reading :)

Cheers for the links, will have a good read :)

This is interesting.

Yes, yes it is :). Just shows that way too much hysteria is made these days about keeping
up with the most current hardware. Then again, I suppose it's always been like that, I just
wasn't around to see it.

Absolutely. Normally when I read a CPU review, I almost always ignore the synthetic benchmarks or games at low resolutions like 800x600 and look at the real application/gaming performance. It's always a case of games caring far more for the GPU than the CPU. In fact you'll be GPU limited long before you're ever CPU limited.

Even the more modern games, if you're willing to turn down the settings you can get away with an older GPU quite well. There's tonnes of videos on YouTube of pretty modern games being very playable on older hardware like an 8800GTX or HD4870.

In fact I'd still be using my Phenom II X4 955, if it were only gaming I cared about. Great CPU, overclocked quite well too, I got 4GHz out of it at one stage. As per other articles on that site, it'd pair up quite nice with my 7950 too.

Good clockers those CPUs if you had a decent board. I had a Phenom 2 Deneb 940 and managed to get 4ghz out of it on a suicide run. I got 3.8ghz stable with it under a NH-D14.

Interesting article

I wish I had a good board for my Q6600 , it came stock in an old 2008 HP computer.
Still have 2 identical HP systems ( my wife's and mine).
I used to buy pre-built systems until I built the one I have now.
I guess I need to check ebay for a good Gigabyte board.

I'm not much of an overclocker to be truthful. Normally I'll leave them at stock and undervolt as far as I can go (which is normally 125mV or so) just so I get less fan noise, plus the stock performance is normally enough for me.

Although it's fun to do a suicide run just to see what you can get out of them at the start. I got 4GHz out of the 955, and 4GHz out my old Q9450 too, neither would have been stable. I've yet to overclock the FX mind you, although it'd be nice to get 5GHz out of it just for laughs if nothing else.
