Intel Core 2 QX6700 + Which version of windows?

I was wondering, my Windows XP Pro license says it'll support 1-2 processors. Does this only apply to "physical processors" or each of the cores too??

If I were to buy the QX6700, would I be stuffed because my XP-Pro will not support it?

:D

Personally speaking, if I was given one I`d be happy in myself that it will work with no probs on XP.

Having said that, with the lack of advantages being given by having a dual core (writers not accomodating the fact), I`d be hesitant in buying a quad atm.

Quad core actually offers many benefits however most won't be seen by the average user at this point in time. XP will support the processor no problem but the selection of multi-threaded software is very slim. Most multi-threaded programs are rendering programs and other productivity apps. Games coming out this year should all start seeing the benefit of dual and quad core chips.

If you've got the money and a compatible mobo and enough power, GO FOR IT! :) Oh yeah, and Intel recommends that you fold for team 43461 when purchasing a QX6700.

I wouldn't get one...yet

Not supported enough and very expensive. Better off with a lower C2D (6600 and above) and overclock it. Then save for when they're cheaper and better supported.

I was this [ ] close to moving over a quad system :o . The only reason of purchase was that I've just started doing a lot of 3D rendering. But being a broke student and all ;), I've opted to spend the money on books, clothes and booze. oh and an opty180 for the time being :):D

Meh, I mean depending on how well the 3d rendering package u`r using is written, the quad may`ve been good.

All depends, and I guess it`d depend if u`r doing this as a student - thus using the package supplied/requested/advised by the uni/college. Some have been known to use old old packages, that have gone open/freeware, or lite versions of new apps, but are crippled coz they`re lite.

Even so, at this moment in time, if I had the cash thrown at me, I`d look at the best mobo and a c2d as high as I can afford.

hmmm I've seen 3DS Max utilise two cores on my friends PC so I assume it wouldn't be any different with quad cores? We've also had 3DS utilise 3 floors of PC's for some rendering at uni :D :D
