i7 Temperatures

Sorry about this guys, but I thought I ought to check before I did anything to stupid. I've got a brand new EVGA classified with a i7 920 on it. Its under water and running at 1.305V with VTT at +250mV.

Firstly are these voltages OK?

Secondly, it is clocked at 4.2GHz and under intel burn (10 passes stable) it was topping out at 70C with HT enabled. Is this OK for full time use?

I7's are hot chips mate and your temps are normal for that level tbh, as long as it doesnt go any higher youll probs be ok.

Excellent! I'm pretty pleased with that, a 4.2GHz Quad core with 1600MHz memory for less than the price of my previous processor. Also that EVGA board is beautiful...joy to work with

In order to see what Intel themselves say, here's the links to the Datasheet on the i7's:

It seems 67.9C is the max figure for when it's dissapating the full 130W it's rated for, 1.55V is the max for Vcc (Main CPU voltage), and VTT's absolute max according to the Datasheet is 1.35V. So take it from there. :)

Also bear in mind that the max safe temperature quoted would be for 24/7 usage really, so if it tops a tad over the max safe limit while stress testing, but you don't run your CPU at 100% that often, then it shouldn't be too much of a cause of worry.

1.30V vcore, 1.2VTT and 69C is not much to worry about. I don't run prime 24/7 so life is pretty sweet :D

Great temps for an i7 at that voltage, especially with HT enabled. :)

A little tip: If an overclock is stable, your temps are fine.

Heat causes instability, therefore, if it's stable, then your temps are fine.

People say that heat degrades CPUs, while this is true, to a very minor extent, a bad overclock or high voltage will degrade a CPU much faster.

I found on my old 790i borad that it wasnt the temperature that killed the overclock but a terrible northbridge chip. It would run under water at 40C, but would freeze, no matter what I did with the settings on the ram and processor.

This new board has made me realize why I love computers again.

Weird.

Most 790i motherboards were awesome, (especially the eVGA one with a digital PWM).

I've heard that the eVGA Digital PWM board can match some of the better X48 boards for overclocking.

Actually if you google "790i freezing" you will see the problem. Most were very picky with RAM, and the memory controller was rubbish.

That is all OK mine does almost exactly the same mate.
