hi, i am ordering a system for a friend right now, money is a problem, gpu will be 7790. he wants i5, 3330 @3ghz is £138 should he just get an i3? as the unlocked cpu with a cooler is nearer to £200

this is a sytem for gaming only

Unlocked doesn't add anything if he doesn't know how to overclock. i3 CPUs are not actual quad cores, but Hyperthreaded dual core CPUs where the i5 is a true quad core chip.

As of this day, most games don't use more than 4 cores anyway as the current-gen consoles were holding back development. In the future we might see games using more cores as the next-gen consoles will have 8-core CPUs. I'd definitely grab the i5.

Any reason you're not going Haswell when you do go for an i5?

reason 1, money. a mobo will be double the cost, we goin h61.

but a locked 3ghs i5 over a 3.4ghz i3?

What games does he play? If he's more of a cod person than an i3 will do fine. Otherwise it'd make sense to go for the i5 non k with his current budget as games such as BF3 run much better with a quad core or better (my old i3 did do alright but still...). Personally I'd have gone for an AMD cpu in a tighter budget build :P.

i have a 6 core amd cpu and a mobo i was planning on putting up on here if you are interested

a new 6300 and asus m5a78l mobo is £140, what we dont know is what the real world performance of this setup is

The FX-6300 will probably be a tad slower than a decent i5, as the cores on Intel CPUs are stronger. The FX-6300 also has 3 modules with 2 cores each, instead of 6 full cores.

It's a LOT cheaper though and it might be a bit faster in games that can use more than 4 cores. Will the FX-8320 be much too expensive? Cause I'd go for that (make sure you have a proper cooler though).

I've just bought the FX-6300,with a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and MSI 7790OC 1GB and I'm perfectly happy with it for now.
Reverted to my old VGA monitor (1366x768) because using my TV was annoying me, and was playing an early part of the BF3 campaign last night on Ultra preset :D Haven't got into the really heated stuff yet but was running pretty smooth, would probably have to dial it back a bit for 1080 ofc. Can't believe how much better it looks than the console version.
