Grrrr :cussing: :banghead:

Got home from work today ready to get some news up, and BAM! mega slooooowww internet speed and timeout errors galore. I'm on a pretty fast cable connection here so I thought "ah Optus must be doing some work somewhere and failed to tell me". But no that would have been too easy....

After I'd called Optusnet and told their call centre representative that Optus sucked majorly and so did their service, the representative said to me "Sir have you checked the service status on your homepage portal?" Upon looking at the said portal I come across this:

Cable Network

Customers please be advised you may experience slows or congestion when accessing internationally hosted web sites. This is the result of a fibre break in the US caused by a landslide in Portland, Oregon. Confirmation has been received from the US that due to severe storms in the location of the fibre break, this issue will be ongoing for the next 14hrs. Work on restoring the fibre break will commence at daybreak US time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

...whooops :o

Anyway, so I call Optus support back and ask to be referred to the girl I had just roasted on the phone and apologised.

Cutting a long story short....I think in this day and age that there should be enough foresight in Telco/ISP management to have more than one fat pipe coming from the US to Australia godammit. I'm sorry for the people of Portland, Oregon but I need my daily dose to unwind. ISP's and Telco's....get with the program or I shall be forced to say "Oi what's your game!!!!"

Rant over :D

Was referring to the OP.

I'd have quick internet if i attached flash drives full of HTML to a pigeon's leg.

Things do move on. I mean we have hot AND cold running water in Wales these days.

`Net gets snatched from underneath u and it`s weird how life is suddenly loses all meaning these days.

I`d be the same.

Im on the border between wales and england. My internet differs depending on the wind speed. Blowing me towards wales starts timeouts and general lack of connection whereas leaning towards england just means my connection speed is sapped from kids using p2p or youtube addicts. No way around this...fibrewire - please?

Fat chance... :(

I know nobody near me who has cable! Only just got ADSL max february last year

Now you know what it feels like to be on satellite internet Matt, hehe. This is pretty much what I go through on an every day basis. My biggest suggestion to anyone looking to move in to the friggin woods is make sure you can get a form of broadband outside the realm of satellite. It works ok for surfing the web and checking email if you dont mind waiting a few seconds for the packets to transfer back and forth before things start to load. But gaming is completely out of the question unless you only play MMO's, and even that can be rough sometimes if you get in to a brutal battle.

Feel for ya Peevs, hopefully it all gets sorted soon. This is the first that I have heard of a break here in the US, surprised it hasnt been on national news.

I had nearly 2 weeks of timeouts and no pages at all, and suddenly it started working again on the day they finally decided to return our support phone calls!
