hyperthreading on or off

when i get Intel core i7 930 should i leave the hyperthreading on or off? I plan to mostly play games on it, cinema 4d, Sony Vegas and photoshop. I heard that ht can slow down some games and single threaded applications, but it comes in usefull when rendering. I plan on overclocking the cpu to about 3.6ghz, and i heard that hyperthreading needs more voltage. Lastly is win 8/8.1 optimised better for hyperthreadibg than win 7?

if you're worried you can always leave it on and set which cores a process uses, open task man find the process (game or what ever) right click set affinity

why get an i7 and then turn ht off. that's pretty much the point of getting an i7

Leave it on.

Turning off HT may have helped a tiny bit with older games but with newer games it is better to have it turned on.

It used to be a thing to turn HT off when the i7 920 was overclocked but these days I don't see the point of doing it to maybe gain 2% or 3% extra performance through a slightly higher OC and then lose about 25% performance by not using HT.

With that generation of i7 HT means practically a 25% increase in performance in programs that can support it. But the downside is that it'll run significantly hotter (~10c) with HT enabled and because of that you won't be able to push the clocks quite as high.

As such, you could even have two OC profiles on the motherboard, one for HT enabled and one for HT disabled, depending on what you're doing.
