How do you cope with the "upgrade" bug ?

As many of us know the upgrade bug can get annoying, That horrible itch to get the next thing i.e GPU, CPU, Mobo, Ram etc...

Even when you know you don't need the extra performance and apart from benchmark numbers you will not be able to tell the difference in games or everyday tasks.

So far when I get the itch to get some hardware I know I don't need I just think "It's either the hardware and I get fat or training and stay Spartan'ish".

Weird way of thinking I know but it seems to work for me in battling the bug ^_^

Whats your method ?

Lack of money, usually

Hahaha yeah that would do it, Thankfully that's not my problem as I'm single'ish, A sort of girlfriend but nothing serious so I don't need to worry about wining and dining, No kids, A decent job, Rent and bills are sort of cheap'ish so I have a little play money available at the end of each month but the upgrade bug is starting to annoy me.

Being indecisive.
I've had so many effing designs but I keep changing my mind. Heck, the only thing I've bought towards my new build is a acrylic pipe bending kit.

-edit- oh yeah, my pc building budget keeps getting used for other stuff. Be it repairing my car or Alcohol ( not connected).

I got married. Before that I was building a machine every 6 months. I've been on my current rig for far too long, but some of the upgrades (GPU, watercooling) along the way helped to curb the urge. Now I'm holding out for DDR4, then it's go time.

Decide if I want it, want it bad or need it. Still using 775 platform just because I can't be bothered to upgrade for prettier graphics and those few extra seconds that I would save on some tasks.

Understandable, I'm going to wait for what ever comes after the Haswell refresh myself :)

I do suffer from it. But after the GPU and monitor upgrade, I will keep it as it is until it can't handle certain tasks or it breaks. I am really happy with my 3 year old system.

For me its either to keep myself busy, like modding a case, fixing stuff, studying :( , or just spend time and money on the car (which I find is closely related to pc's when modifying), or the lack of money and need. My 3 year old rig now can tear the games I play and software I run apart, mainly playing CS:GO right now :)

Not browsing computer stores also helps :P

Ha! Its a tough fight. Luckily I have a wife and kids that help out by using any extra money from the account. If I was single would have to have alternating rigs. One would be in use and the other would be "building". I am at a big stage for next one. Fully water-cooled as much as I can. So I have to be happy just planning and maybe start buying some blocks and stuff to work with hard acrylic tubing. I do have the case though.

Lack of money as Feronix said but also with eyes elsewhere on more "demanding" purchases in the future that are more important to me, namely housing and a new set of wheels when i can

In the past it was a lack of funds, but now it's about other things like saving up for a car, a house and other important things. Having said that, I do plan to do a complete overhaul of my rig in the near future (6 months to a year)

I guess I'm somewhat lucky in this respect... I'm so damned indecisive that it literally takes me F-O-R-E-V-E-R to finally make a purchase on computer parts. I've actually canceled an order and remade it three times before I finally let the package get to my house (My second GTX 680 ASUS Direct CUII).

Generally I always have the itch, but I just can't decide if I should, or with what I should scratch it. Literally hours of my time after work is spent gaming on one screen, and looking at new kit on the other.

I upgrade only if I need to, I've never felt that I must have something. Although I keep looking, by the time this system is struggling I'll be ready with a parts list.

I am literally exactly the same. Got through 4 GPU's in the last 6 months.

You ain't the only one. I built my rig a few months ago, slapped a 4670K in that beast and away I went. Then I got to thinking, I want to keep the CPU for at least 4 -5 years and with games becoming more and more heavily multi-threaded, I just shelled out for a 4770K. I'm in the same boat, my bills aren't expensive, very decent job, no kids and no wife or girlfriend at the moment. I wasn't happy with the i5 anyway. It can be finicky at times when it decides there's a hair up it's ass. I'm ecstatic with everything else that's in my rig though.
