Hi can anyone help me? I want to rip/copy or back up etc my DVD's so I can watch them off my external hard drive so when I go away I don't have to take my hole dvd collection lol and what is the best format for this avi DivX? TTL did tell me the one he uses when I met him at gadget show live but my brain is like a sieve lol

For all my dvd stuff I love dvdfab platinum seems to do it all for me.

I'm using AnyDVD to rip DVD/BD's on the local harddrive and Handbrake to encode them with x264 to a matroska container. AnyDVD is not free i'm afraid, but Handbrake is open source software. It took me a while to figure this combination out, but it seems to work pretty well. Already put all my DVD's (>500) and the first BD's on my NAS. Further I'm using network media players to watch the movies on tv....I would never have done this but my girlfriend wanted me to. I figured it would be better to comply ...not that I was unhappy to get another NAS...hrhr.

Another challenging part is having backups or to decide not to do any...

Some tricks for Handbrake:

Use Constant Quality with an RF between 20 and 22. You'll be fine then.
