Heres a stupid question that i need to make

So i have a PSU cooler master 500w and i ran out of connectors so i bought 2 molex splitters and connect them to my igame760 that has 2 adaptors of 8 pins

so i need 2 molex splitters to get 4 to run those 2 8 pin conectors.

question is can i mess anything up by doing that ? algo my i7 4790k its going at 50° is that a safe temperature ?

Psu is facing the bottom part of the case.

(on the right theres also a sata to molex adaptor image below)

it has 3 molex connectors so what i did was :

first molex - 1 splitter
second molex empty
third molex - 2 splitter

is there any way that could burn up the mother board or the i7, getting a weird smell sometimes but it might be that acer V206HQL worst monitor ever...

its my understanding that if the i7 overheats it will turn off the pc

i think that this strange smell comes from the adapters

Running the molex adapter connectors / splitters is ok as long as you don't overload the 12V rail in the PSU, although it looks like an explosion in spaghetti factory with all those cables everywhere and very messy.

You haven't really touched on what hardware you are running though, CPU, PSU, GFX card(s) hard drives etc so we would have better idea what load is going on through the PSU although we can get a basic idea from the pics, eg Sabertooth z87 with 4790K and 16GB corsair dom plats ram.

Running the power direct off the PSU connectors is preferable and adapters / splitters are used as last resort, but the question is what are you running that needs that many molex connections?

the graphic card : igame 760 that card has 2 8 pins well it comes with adapters to get the power from molex, so what i did is :

i had 3 molex so i bought 2 adaptors or splitters to obtain the 8 pin required for the card

pbG77k4.jpg

This is the front view of the splitters going to the 8 pin adapters 2 molex per 8 pin

and its not that messy for a regular user and im trying to get the system fix ina few months maybe, i want to sleve the cables working on getting what i need, im from mexico i had to import the adapters lol

i didnt even knew 8 pin connectors existed

My general rule of thumb is if the PSU does not come with the right adapter then its not fit for purpose.

That "smell" could be the plastic melting or burning close to the cable as your drawing more current through them.

They are not meant for the amperage you are putting through them, with that rig im surprised you did not get a better equipped PSU.

Ive seen several fires caused by this along with mobo shorting out and frying components.

You have a good setup. I strongly suggest you invest in a better PSU for longevity.

If you are running just one card, you can still get a good quality PSU from Corsair, Seasonic, for example, that isn't expensive. Technically speaking, you are ok using those cables, but I really would feel insecure using them.

Just one pop and your PSU could not only get damaged, but could in worst case scenario fry your mobo, CPU and GPU too.

i would love to upgrade but the price of the parts are just way to expensive

if you guys can recomend me or link me a site that has 5 or 4 molex i will try to import it from china (that logic @_@ its cheaper for me to buy it from china than my country lol)

-----------

with the thermal radar i ran the fans at 80% speed the smell that came from the case went on a rampage, im just wild guessing here but can a case with anti-dust somehow draw the smell from the fireworks from new year and xmas ?

its not like i have the case outside but in my mind i thought ooooooo that might be it....

i open the case again the adaptors are not warm, nothing melting, only god knows where that smell comes from

everything seems to be working, i will upgrade if i get my hands on something cheap so i ask you to go ham on ideas

ty very much guys.

mmmm it seems some would upgrade and for some others the psu is fine.

so im going to ask a question.

i thought about the 2 splitters well i had 2 to make it pretty and hide a little bit more the cable, however i decided to take 1 off.

so my psu has 4 molex connectors this i what i did :

1.- goes to the case cm storm stryker
4.- go to the GPU

so i added 1 molex to get 5 molex slots, question is :

Do i need to change the PSU, will it overheat, can 1 adapter do a mess and burn my components like someone posted before ???
and is there a correct way to put the adapter or any slot would be fine

Corsair CX600 comes with:
ATX connector (24 pin) x1
EPS Connector (4+4) x1
floppy x 1
Molex x 4
PCI (6+2) x 2
Sata Power x6

So here you don't need those molex adapters as the PSU comes with everything you need. And should not be expensive as their builder PSU are some of their cheapest.

Could go with the CX500 which just has less molex and Sata but was giving you some head room to play with, so the fan does not start up all the time.

And yes those molex adapters are not normally rated for the amperage you might pull when gaming, and if your PSU does not cut out with the shorting of the cable if it does go then say goodbye to your graphics card and you will then wish you got the right bits first time round.

If you watch any of TTL's vids when does he ever say oh here look ill use a molex adapter instead of getting a tool specific for the job.

If you look at the pinout for an 8-pin PCI-E cable there are 3 +12v pins and 5 Ground pins. It's designed to take 150 watts, that's 50 watts per +12v wire. Obviously there is a significant factor of safety.

If you look at the wires from each molex leading back to the PSU you will find there is just one +12v cable. So by attaching two 8-pin adapters you are potentially drawing 300 watts on a single wire designed to safely deliver 50 watts. Even if it had a factor of safety of 4 which I really doubt it does you could still quite easily melt it. I would imagine that's what you can smell. The adapters are the strongest part of the chain. There isn't a problem with adapters per se, just the ridiculous implications of linking them without giving any consideration to what you are doing.

If you put two molex onto one chain and two onto another you will have at least halved the current going through an individual wire but tbh it's still a bad idea.

All your hardware looks nice, just get a PSU that can do the job properly.

i fix the ram frecuency to 1866 ty.

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showpost.php?p=815528&postcount=10

So it seems that i would need a new psu, thing is that i need 5 molex like i said on the previous post

1.- the case
2.- 4 for the gpu

im looking for the smell and it seems the monitor acer V206HQL might be the issue since its near the case i cant tell what it is, still seems verything on my case is running smoothly, idk how to check a monitor tho LOL

ty guys ill check the psu suggestions thanx again

Just to re-iterate you should look for a PSU with at least two 6+2 pin PCIe Connectors
