Hard Drive Degradation

Hey guys, is do HDDs lose performence over time? I've had this 500GB system HDD for 5years now (as old as the pc) SMART says it's 100% fine but I feel it's taking a lot of time to load things that some years ago would load faster.

(Well I'm not looking to upgrade it and I don't care about data loss since I have a 1TB drive where I do backups.)

Probably because its got alot more stuff on it then it did when it was new?

I have 140GB of free storage. (everything is defragged and all)
And no, I don't think formatting does any better

have you done a clean re-install lately? if not, theres your problem....
