GPU memory thermal pads? Or alternative?

I'm ripping my hair out here :(

I want to at least get the Ultra back together. Sadly I have twelve ram chips, a RAMDAC and some what look like Thyristors at the back of the card which all need to sit under thermal pads.

The problem however? 3x3cm of 2mm thermal padding is four quid. I would need about 8 of them :(

As you can see it's totally un economical.

Any one know something I don't? Or, an alternative?

Thanks. I really just want to get it back in one piece :(

you not got any old cards? i stripped my 9800gt the other day to clean the cooler out and that had pretty thick thermal pads on the ram

Nothing mate. All I have spare now is a 8600GTS and I either need to keep it as a spare or sell it. Plus, it only has 4 pads on being 256mb. The Ultra has twelve ram chips :(

Do you really need 2mm ones for all of them? Thats pretty thick.

It could be 1mm tbh Tom. Thing is they all seem to cost the same regardless of thickness mate. Thermal paste and pads are the biggest con known to man. Years ago a mate of mine was paying loads for thermal paste. All it is is a compound of heat proof liquid with ground up aluminium in. So what was I using? copper grease. Free from a mechanic I knew and could withstand the temps of a diesel engined truck.

Sadly dude if you can get them cheaper on the bay then I think you are stuck, you need to get the right size though otherwise youll get poor contact / warped board or both.

Yeah I know. Sucks bums man. They weren't there in the first place and it's impossible to measure :(

Plus they'll run me about £30. Irony is I can buy a complete aftermarket cooler for that :(

I just don't want to sink loads of cash in only to find it's still buggered :(

Cheapest aftermarket for the 8800u is the tri fan Arctic Xtreme. About £40. Not gonna risk that on this card... I'm 99% sure it's BER tbh.

In the end I found some 1.5mm pads in strips. Basically 120mm long (12cm) by 20mm wide (2cm). The chips are 16mmx10mm so I can cover 12 memory chips with one pad and the second pad will take care of the Ramdac and small chips at the back (poss VRMs not sure). 1.5mm thick.. Basically I measured the cooler and the disparity is about 1mm. However, I don't want them to slip out and .5mm is nothing and will allow full contact. These are like gray rubber things like the one on the back of the card between the back of the GPU and the extra fin sink. So all in I spent £10.35. Worth taking a chance, but a £40+ cooler that could be worthless should the card be dead is crazy.

Will deffo downclock the card to GTX speeds should it still work. That way it'll be cool as a cucumber :)

I got some Phobyas in the end for about a tenner :) Baking the card fixed it too, but of course I don't trust it and wouldn't sell it on so I just put it in a box incase I need something in an emergency :)

Sadly the ones on WCing are all sold out :(
