Going from a 5850 to a 6950

As the title suggests , ive been offered a 6950 this is from a friend whos upgrading and offering me the card 2nd hand. Im wondering if its worth me doing this as im not sure its that much of an upgrade.

My 2 concerns and possible reasons for doing it are.

1. It might be one of the unlockable ones

2. I wanted to upgrade my card for the upcoming onslaught of games coming out (BF3, MW3, D3, SWTOR, Dota2) etc etc

If the card isnt unlockable and is just a 2gb 6950 what if any performance am i likely to see ?

I know i can get 80+ for my current card so if the new ones costing me 140ish is it worth it ?

A 6950 not unlocked will be about ~10% - 15% better in DX10 and ~20% - 30% in DX11 compared to the 5850. This is just my assumption going from 5970 to 6990.

Dont get me wrong the card i would like is a 580 if im honest but im wondering if a 6950 that could be unlocked for about 70-80 pounds (inc selling on my old card) is too good to turn down ?

You will get ROUGHLY the same performance increase as going from a 6850 as the 5850 and 6850 are nearly identical performance wise, look up some reviews that compare the 2 (more likely to be found than 5850vs6950) and judge if you think its worth it.

Hi,

Looks like you'll get a slight boost, slightly more if you can unlock. Don't think it'll necessarily be enough to get much in the way of wow factor though. In my opinion I think you're better off saving your money and seeing what the next gen brings. Your 5850 isn't a bad card and I'm sure it'll tide you over until the interesting stuff comes out later this year / early next.
