Gaming build for a mate (2000 pounds)

I agree, why not save a little bit of cash grab a GTX 680 that will be more than enough for the rig.

If he wanted to save money then just get a single 670. The 680 is barely faster and costs like 40% more
biggrin.png

Going Sli/xf isn't massively overkill - it allows you to get seamless gameplay with all modern games and will last a good while. 2 cards on Metro 2033 will only just average 60fps. In skyrim you'll average about 80 and in Shogun 2 with max unit size and flaming arrows I think even 2 670s in sli will be working hard to keep min frame rates up.

He isn't really into watercooling. Doesn't want to maintain ANYTHING. Not even refilling. I'm changing the case though. Thinking of a Corsair 800D or an Aerocool XPredator

I have a 680 and skyrim maxed out at 1080p res and I average 100fps out and about but mostly its stuck on 120 which is my monitors refresh rate.

MADE SOME UPDATES AND ASKED A QUESTION.

SEE IN FIRST POST

Nice spec man

If I was to advise you to change something it would be the following.

Add another ssd if he plans on playing lots of games such as skyrim, bf3, crysis etc as they will fill up the 120 fairly fast. I have the same ssd and its f'ing quick but I only have cs:s, cs:go beta, beat hazard, payday, skyrim, crysis, civ 5 and f1 2011 on it. Now that may seem like loads but if he is like me that plays lots of different games maybe a second one dedicated to games would be handy and leave the other one for the os and maybe a select few applications.

I would also change the 2tb hard drive to something a bit slower and cheaper as it will more than likely be a media drive like I have in my system. Go for something like the seagate barracuda. I dont think it will be much slower but it is a good bit cheaper.

Perhaps a sound card? when I put in one years ago it made sounds much crisper and when coupled with a good headset youll pinpoint people in fps games very easy by sound to the point youll get acused of hacking. This happens me all the time in public servers in counter strike.

What monitor does he have? maybe upgrading it might be useful if it is a cheap one. Have a look at 120hz monitors which imo are great for gaming especially if he is gonna be running most games around 100fps.

What headset and mouse and stuff does he have? maybe changing them would be useful. Even things like mouse mats can be added cheaply and improve his gaming experience. I personally have a steelseries qck heavy xxl. With the bigger bigger size I could lower my in game sensitivity and not worry about running out of space for my mouse. This had an effect on my aim to the point it made it more consistant but it took a while to get used to.

He has a 24" Full HD Monitor, so

And he has a KOS headset (almost €180) and a pretty good mouse.

I'll add a soundcard and a mousepad for him then

I'll change the 120gb ssd to an 256gb ssd then and get the seagate hdd

Also, do you have a clue on the PSU? It says the dual GTX670 needs two individual 12volt rails, and the AX850 doesn't have that. Does this really matter?

Correct - got confused when I was typing this on my phone between this and another thread asking about a multi monitor setup. My bad!

If he is determined to run the most demanding game at max settings then you really need to be aiming to beat metro, if you take a look at these reviews you can see that to get 60fps+ average you are still going to need 2 cards:

But that will see the pc cruise through anything for a good while to come

I've seen a number of builds which use an 850 for 2 top notch cards - it will be fine!

The size of the SSD is very dependant on the individual - needs to be big enough to fit however many games and programs he has in regular use. Some people are fine with 60gb, most are fine with 120gb. Some need more.

The caviar black is the best HDD - it is particularly quick in burst data transfer but that isn't really important if you are playing movies etc. It would be more important in an open-world game like Skyrim where the game will suddenly demand textures for the next area but you are using an SSD so yea the seagate, or a lower spec caviar (the green) will be great.

Allright, thanks

I think I'll swap the ssd for an 240gb Force GT and the caviar black for a seagate

Can I ask where you are getting your parts from because I can only get a similar spec to the above at 2200 gbp and thats with a wd caviar green not a black.

Also if its a gaming pc I wouldnt go with a 3930k its just not worth the money as similar if not better gaming performance can be got out of a cheaper cpu such as the ivy bridge cpu. Where the 3930k rules is in high threaded applications such as video rendering which is why I went with one as my pc is not just a gaming rig. I would save the money and get an ivy bridge cpu such as the one in the first post and spend the money on a good monitor or some beers.

major flaw in that build, the asus rog board is EATX, cm690 only supports up to ATX size mobo..........

id also say to go with the bitfenix alchemy cables over the corsiar ones as they are cheaper, as for the SSD, better going crucial M4

in my opinion, the 800D is the best case on the market, just the cost is above what i could afford (hence y i went bitfenix shinobi xl)

Asus Rampage IV Formula X79 is an ATX board m8... The Extreme board is E-ATX.

Also if you watch TTL's vid of the 690II Black & White, you'll notice a E-ATX board in there.

Combination of Scan, eBuyer, CCL & Aria taking advantage of free delivery by most.

I've done the research, have you ? Same goes for my SSD choice.

apologies about the rampage board, i genuinely thought that with most offerings on X79 being E-ATX that the maximus followed the trend, yes the corsair cables are nice, but the bitfenix sleeved cables are just as good, and ive used them in 2 builds now, wouldnt look at any others, SSD, ive tried intel, OCZ (yes i know really poor choice!) but the cruical M4 is the best by far out of the 3, and price vs performance it stacks up as a potential market leader, im not saying that samsung are a poor make, just they arent reknowned for their drives more for their monitors
