FX 8150 CPU Throttling Issues

Afternoon,

My CPU is throttling to between 7 and 21 multiplier on stock speeds and I'm not entirely sure why. (CPU: AMD FX-8150 Mobo: M5A78L-M/USB3)

Firstly I disabled 'Quiet n' Cool' and turned off 'Turbo Core' AMD Overdrive disabled it again (To ensure that APM was disabled)

Secondly thinking it was a CPU cooling issue with stock cooling, bought a H90 which has made my CPU alot cooler yet I seem to be still getting the CPU throttling even with CPU being 50C under load max.

My current thoughts and conclusion is that the issue lies with my motherboard, I've read that the VRM is not really able to cope with 8150 and may be overheating.

I don't really want to jump into any more components before getting some advice and expertise on it first and I've seem to run a ground trying to find accurate advice on forums that match my situation

I'm very new to forum posting so please excuse my errors though I do welcome your feedback and Any advice or questions please don't hesitate to comment.

Many thanks for even reading let alone helping ^_^

What program do you use for temp monitoring? The issue with AMD cpus is that the temperature sensors are a bit crap, meaning that your 50c is inf 70c, which could cause throttling as thats above the cpu's thermal limit. Also with AMD 'boards you pay for what you get :l.

that mobo looks like it only has a 4+1 power phase design, an thats not really enough for the 8 cores

I've tried SpeedFan, HWMonitor and AMD Overdrive all with sameish results. Currently idle TMPIN0 at 35C with SpeedFan and HWMonitor

And the get what you paying for is correct and with no offence to the mobo just not upto this build

Edit1: I Prefer HWM

Its on the supported CPU list, however as we all know, the supported CPU list lies when it comes to 8 cores.

I like AMD's Overdrive for temp monitoring. The built in stress test is useful as well.

yeah just because its on the supported list doesn't mean this it wont throttle unfortunately

no problem mate. try an get a 990fx mobo, but also steer clear of the gigabyte 990fx ud3 that board will give you a headache
