Future Project

OK guys I know you are all trying to be helpful and it's reassuring to know that. But if I went ahead and told you what it was going to be used for, so that you did a build a list...it would then be your build and not mine.

If I had chosen something that was not compatible, like trying to use a cpu for a 1366 socket, then that would be different.

Why can't you just tell what you need the rig for? If you don't want to tell us, why did you ask for help in the first place? If it was you to check compatbility, then you shouldn't be building a rig if you don't know which things are compatible
So please tell us which games you play and whether you do video editing or 3d rendering, otherwise you and us are just wasting our time

We dont need to know specifics btw?
Just generally what it's for ie, general use, gaming, gaming with a little rendering, a lot of rendering etc...

The OP's dead set on getting the 2011 build, so I say let him go for it. He only asked if we would give it a "+1" or "-1". It's definitely +1, but if he's not willing to tell us the purpose of the rig, we can't recommend anything.

If the rigs for gaming, then he's wasting a lot of money for essentially no performance gain over a much cheaper rig. He didn't ask if he could build a cheaper rig in the OP

Agreed - but it was posted due to my advice - and I did mean for that advice to be a post here and we can help change a few things :P

Up to the OP though

LOL you guys don't give up easy do you...it's a combo of all those things james and yassar has it exactly right in that i just wanted to see if you guys give it a "+1" or a "-1" .

So if you thought by my saying I posted this on James' advise you thought it was because I needed help with parts choice then my bad. Soz guys ^_^

Sounds like he just wants it to look at, really. As long as you don't think that spending more money means it'll last longer, mate; that's just not true anymore.

Well, if you've got the cash for it, you can go ahead and do whatever you want but if it's all about aesthetics, then it's subjective and nobody can advise you on it.

Yup defo about having something nice to look at, so aesthetics is a big part in the build, especially as colours are based around the mobo ;)

Not building to a budget so could quite easily have gone for the "best" stuff, like the Rampage IV Extreme, 3960X and GTX690, but the mobo doesn't even tie into the 'theme' I have in mind.

Wanted to start with the newest Intel platform as I intend to hold onto it for longer than most would, so wanted to be reasonably sure replacements would still be around should anything break further down the years.

Well, 'replacements' will still be available as long as they're viable. Say my old music production rig died on me; I could pick up a replacement CPU for less than a fiver (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-Athlo...Processors&hash=item415b8f782f#ht_1374wt_1039).

I think you should really think about utility rather than just getting the 'best' available gear. The 2100 socket only supports i7 CPUs, and will do for the foreseeable future, maybe forever. If you're not rendering or doing a bunch of other heavy CPU intensive tasks that support quad-core processing (most don't), you're just throwing money away. You won't see the CPU behind the cooler, anyway.
