First time OC

So I'm currently OC'ing my main rig (i7 950 and Rampage III Extreme) and I've hit a bit of a snag. 3.3 Ghz was perfectly fine, my temps were between 50-55(all temps are in Celsius) when running Prime95. Now I'm up to 3.8 Ghz (my goal is 4.2), and my temps when running Prime95 are between 80-85.

When playing games my temps are between 45-55. Maya, UDK and Photoshop cause my temps to be between 40-50, which is barely more than my idle 40-45.

I'm using a corsair H70 to cool my CPU, and I have their included fan speed reduction plug (or whatever it is) being used, cause man, those fans were noisy at their full speed. I should also mention I am using the two fans as exhaust, instead of the corsair recommended intake. I know my temps will be higher as a result, but the lack of a fan filter at the rear exhaust means I'll need to clean my rig every week instead of every 3-4 weeks (from what I've observed).

I've got my Vcore at 1.25v atm. I was trying with 1.2, but Windows would just freeze whenever I tried to do something.

I should also mention that I'm not OCing my RAM

Any advice?

Need way more details dude. You asking for advise and you havnt told us enough about the BIOS settings you are using.

Youve got 1333 mhz ram? Thats a bit stupid with a R3Extreme mate - 1600 minimum for an overclocked rig.

Read the other threads on here already, all the answers are in them.

But basically aim for 200 bclk with a 20 multi. If you get issues you may need more volts OR it doesnt like the ram divider being down that low.

yeah, I'm planning on upgrading the RAM ASAP. Probably will be in the next month or so.

My issue isn't with stability...it's with temps. My temps are fine when doing my normal tasks, but under Prime 95 they get dangerously high. This could be due to the fact that the two fans on my H70 are set up to exhaust instead of intake and they have that resistor that lowers their RPM. Would removing the resistor lower the temps significantly? Also, no matter what program I use on my comp, my temperatures never go over 65 degrees, with the exception of Prime 95. Since the temps when running Prime are dangerous, but otherwise well within limits, should I be worried?

Figured...I just dislike how the best performing air coolers (D14, Silver Arrow) have such ugly fans. I know I can swap them out, but really, it seems a little odd. Beige and Brown doesn't really go with anything except for maybe a sabertooth board, and the Silver Arrow fans... I guess they kinda go with old school Gigabyte colors, but really?

Yes, I am picky about asthetics

Just a hunch... What is your settings for CPU config???? Is HT on, Speedstep, etc... Also if you have asus AI suite II installed. BEWARE!!!... I have everything but HT turned off. I set my vcore to 1.165. and noticed that the asus software was automatically running vcore at 1.224Volts.... This is running ram at 1600. no XMP. So i unistalled the ai suite all together.

Asus has promised fixes. But that has yet to be seen, love my mobo, its a formula III , but the after support has been terrible. Make sure you turn speedstep etc off, if not, it will jump your voltages up when running prime, etc. Also use coretemp or HWMonitor to look at individual core temps, Hope that helps.
