I started out in IT by doing PC repair & build work in my local village for friends and family, as a past-time. As the work started to build up I started saving to get some qualifications. I took the A+ route, with N+ too. By the time I finished these courses, my hobby had grown into a full time business, and I was looking at offering support contracts to local firms. I hit a stumbling block here though, because they wanted MS qualifications and the A+ wasn't enough for some firms. I started with the MCDST and then onto the MCSE, it cost me a small fortune as I had to fund it all myself. Since gaining these qualifications though, the business has grown really well.
I tried breaking into IT without any qualifications before I started up my business and I found it impossible to get a foot in the door. That's why I started up on my own and I haven't looked back since. I left school having vastly underachieved, I was a bit of a bad boy while at school and never listened to all the lectures I got Wish I had of now though as it would have made life that much easier! I think if anyone really wants a career within IT, there is always a way. Some may find it harder than others, but with some hard work you will get there.
I have enrolled for a Foundation Degree in ICT Support and have been accepted but I have also just noticed and applied for an IT Apprenticeship very close to me so will see what happens there.
Atleast I know if I dont get this apprenticeship I have the Foundation Degree to fall back on.
I also get my results from this years course very soon.
Had no joy with that apprenticeship, it wasnt going to teach me anything new and they were expecting me to do stuff on a level I had already surpassed.
So thats it, I am going back to college to do this Foundation Degree in ICT Support which will last 2 more years.
I then have the option to go onto Uni for 1 more year and end up with an honours degree or something. I will cross that bridge when I come to it though.
