File sharing via router

May sound an easy question but I cant think of the technical name for it to search for.....

I have my PC and my partners PC wired into my VM router and have access to the net on both machines, all fine.

What I'm trying to find out is:
Is there a way to have like a dropbox folder on both machines that can be used to share files without having to either email it or use USB drives.

EG.
my PC (PC1) has a folder on the desktop named 'Drop box' (could be called anything) and my partners pc (PC2) has a folder called 'Drop box' on the desktop and basically if I put a .doc or .mp3 into the PC1 Drop box folder, PC2 can simply drag it out and save it....

Hopefully I explained it good enough to understand and both machines are running W7 64bit

I set mine up using windows network sharing all you need is the code it gives you for either computer, it then gives you shared access to shared folders.

EDIT: When in "My Computer" click on Homegroup.

Assuming OS is Windows 7. You can add both PCs to a homegroup and then click on the drop box folder -> toolbar -> share with -> Homegroup (read/write).

That's the easiest method.

Another method would be to right-click on the file -> properties -> sharing -> share -> choose people on the network. The other PC should be able to find that listed on the network. They could also map that folder as a drive for ease of access.

You could even just install dropbox :) then you can access it from any computer and the web and even your phone, as well :P

yep, either local sharing (through windows) or both install Dropbox like you said. Then share the account. Faster for local if you are transferring a lot of files

Funnily enough I've just signed up to Dropbox, you start with 2gb, and if you do a few little things like share, and connect a phone, or any other devise, they give you another 48gb so after a little over 5 mins, you can get 50gb. It seems good, but you can only share what is in that specific folder.

I'll see how it goes, it's a good simple to use option.

drop box is good for sharing photos and files (small ones) with people who are not on your network, with my HTC one x i got 50GB of free storage for 2 years which has just ran out.
