F@H Linux VM

Like I said here (LINK), I think about doing a F@H-Linux VM. All you need is the VMWare Player (of course freeware)

and a Webbrowser to configure the VM. The idea is from the ocn.net-forums, where they "offer" a F@H-VM-Image

(LINK).

I would simply "steal" their VM and rewrite the code to brand it to OC3D (from default-team to "corporate identity" when

talking about the web-config).

But before doing so, I'd like to know, if there is a need for this, because I do not want to use time for nothing.

The advantage is, that you do not have to care about how to configure your F@H-Client(s).

You simply enter the information like username, passkey and cpu-cores and thats it.

So, should I do an official OC3D-F@H-VM?

Though that would be a great gesture for the team, my personal opinion is that it's not worth it.

The big draw to folding in a Linux VM was that it allowed you to receive bigadv/bigbeta work units (as the title of the thread you linked to says) while also allowing you to keep native Windows, which did not support bigbeta units. However, now that the requirements for bigadv have been significantly increased, you would end up receiving the same work units as you would if you were running a Windows client. I know that folding in Linux natively adds a bit of a performance boost, but I feel that this would probably be largely offset by the overhead that is required to run the VM in the first place. This didn't matter when people were receiving much better work units, but now there's just not as much benefit. You will also be using more memory to keep the VM running.

This is just my opinion. You could still do it of course, and I'd be interested in seeing the results, but I don't know if it would really be worth your time.

Thank you very much for your response riot.

Well, after finishing my thesis I am definitely going to realise this project, just to have one more reference to show

in both, the programming-sector and the design-sector (for doing an OC3D-Design @preferences page and maybe

some kind of local EOC-Stats-Page with OC3D-Design). Its not that I have such a huge need for references, but

the more the merrier :-)

And the others have quite nothing to do with web-design or web-programming, so, another win just there.

I am going to wait some more days, of course. Maybe someone says "OMG, I really need this kinda thing", then I

will do it just now... we'll see :-)
