EVGA 560 Ti very hot

Hi,

My EVGA 560 ti was running at 54 degrees at idle. That seems a bit hot to me so i added 2 120mm fans in front of it and removed the case. So now there are 2 120mm fans set to kick in at 100% at 45 degrees and the GPU fan set the same. Now im seeing idle temps of between 48-50.

However, during gaming with a 3 fans on max im hitting 91 degrees. This again seem ridiculous. Do they usually run that hot?

Im at a bit of a loss what to do to be honest. Do i pull off the stock cooler and apply new thermal paste, look for an after market cooler? I cant find a water block for it otherwise id make it its own cooling loop.



Also the gpu fan is loud so id like to find a way of sorting it out.
 
It could be dust build up. My temps increase by around 10 C after a couple of months due to dust build up, which is why I clean my rig every few months.
 
Its either the thermal paste has dried up or there is dust in the heatsinks. If i was you take off the shroud and take off the GPU heat sink and apply new thermal paste. If there is dust remove it. If none of this fixes the problem than I don't know.
 
I used to have the same heat with my XFX 7950 in a smaller low noise case, the airflow wasn't to good in that case. Now I have a bigtower Corsair Obsidian 800D case and the gpu's max temp at idle is 40c. It idles between 37-40c. But the gpu gets up to about 50c if I connect a secondary monitor.
 
There's no dust and its even got extra fans blowing at it. The air flow is great, 4 rad fans blow in, 2x 140mm front intakes, 140mm exhaust 120mm exhaust plus the case has good vents in it.

So it looks like the heats ink needs to come off. Any tips? What paste should I use?

Its most likely the thermal paste, clean off the old thermal paste and put some new one on. Make sure its good thermal paste.
 
Hi again,

Temps are still 92 degrees while playing Sleeping Dogs.

Its getting worrying now. Im not sure what max temps are but this seems hot to me.

So heatsink was clean, i took it off, cleaned up the paste (left the thermal pads for the ram) then replaced paste with MX-4.

Hopefully i did as you guys suggested although i had never taken apart a GPU before.

So temps are still high even though i have 2x120mm fans blowing at it along with the reference fan that came stock.

im not interested in water cooling it or buying anything for it because i want to get a 670, but what i do want to try and do is get these te,ps down so i dont kill it.

Any help would be much appreciated
 
Lower clocks and voltage?
If this does not help much then you previous OC may have been very demanding and you degraded the silicon much faster than normal so your temps are not as stable. As a result your gpu core is starting to show its age and just can not cope with the OC demands. But i am pretty sure sleeping dogs is a demanding game so the temps in turn will be high, i have not played so i can not give any experienced advice.
Also a 7950 will perform better than a 670 in sleeping dogs(in most games actually) and a 7970 is the same price as a 670 but faster.:)

Is that how high the card came clocked from EVGA? I ask because I can no longer seem to find any addition of the card through their website apart from the FPB version, and that card came clocked at 850 Mhz so I dunno if that's the same one. Either way that's a fairly decent overclock, so I'd tend to agree with the silicon having aged a bit faster than anticipated. The same symptoms manifested with me when I had my 2600K die on me: suddenly the temps went wildly out of control, and nothing I did could curb it.

How long have you had this card? your max temps with that thing probably shouldn't exceed 80C in an ideal situation just for the sake of longevity. I run an EVGA 560 SC in my current rig and with the factory overclock plus Arctic Silver Ceramique2 paste I hit about 76C. Since our two cards probably use a near identical heat sink I am willing to wager that that's about where your temps should sit. If they are still going bat s*** on you then I would just back off of any additional overclocking that has been done to the card and just use it as it came until you can get that shiny new updated card.

The way things look with your card presently however, I am willing to bet that it has already entered it's death throws :-\.

Its at stock speeds and always has been. Yeah its a pretty demanding game but i still think that 92 degrees is hot, but my knowledge of GPU's is nil, so maybe thats about the right temp and im worrying for nothing? do you know?

ive had it since the end of Jan when i started getting into this whole overclocking business. I bought it second hand as my intention was to not play games, in fact i never even knew how to overclock, let alone thought id be doing it!. So yeah, it may have been ruined in its previous life.

I think it may be time to call in some favours and get that 670!

if thats the case, what should i do with this old card? Any ideas?
 
lol gotcha, an SSC FTW card. The person you bought it from, do you know if they dabbled in trying to overclock it any before you had it? Not that it changes anything at this point, but at least for the sake of knowing I'd want to know.

As for getting rid of the card, I personally wouldn't have it in me to try to sell off a piece of tech that was damaged goods to someone else. Try to locate an electronics recycling facility in your area, they'll break down the bits and repurpose it all for something else (at least what parts CAN be reused).

I do not know why you are so bent on getting a 670 when it does not perform as good as 7970 for the same money?
 
I probably wont sell it. I might throw it in my home server and look into folding with it or something or bitcoin or something like that until it dies.
 
Just tune down the clocks on the card if you re-use it to keeps the temp down if you decide to fold for a very long extended period of time.

It's not really a choice I'm afraid. My pc dual boots OSX and OSX doesn't support 7000 series cards. Well it sort of does now, there's some leaked drivers for them but they are proving very hard to get working and it's sort of hit and miss. Whereas the 670 & 680 both work out of the box

660ti is supported but not for me
670 I can't afford but it's what I want
680 I really can't afford lol
690 isn't supported.

I had a chance to play about and overclock the powercolor 7870 LE Myst. That thing really impressed me, it overclocked like a beast and was def the best bang for buck card I've seen. I'd love 1 or 2 of them, but I can't.

Yeah I'd have to. I know nothing about folding. So silly question, is the gpu at max load all the time?
