so its come to that point again, which im sure a few of you have been through...

even though last time you reformatted, you promised yourself that this time you would keep everything organised, everything would have a place, you wouldnt have loads of useless programs on your comp and your desktop would be beautiful and uncluttered

well once again, i have lots of useless programs, most of my folders are a mess, and everything needs to be reorganised. so its time to have another day of organisation, and once again ill promise myself that this time i wont let it get in such a mess....

anybody know where im coming from? lol

Same as me lol, I reformat but then start re-installing loads of junk, thinking of a stupid reason why I need it.

yep i installed vista 64 for the first time about 2 months ago and swore to myself THAT this time I wouldnt need to reformat for a long time...................however,am thinking I may need to re install soon(already)

Yep. I even promise myself that I'll make an image of the nice clean install after i've finished installing the required apps. Never happens tho.

What I'd quite like is a freeware Vmware style clone that doesn't make a mess of your system when it installs - or better yet runs from a standalone exe. Then I could have a "dirty" version of windows for installing all my crap on without having to reboot.

Exactly the same as me.

Edit: Jim, what program can take an image once you've installed all your programs/games etc? Would be amazing if I knew how to do that? What media do you store it on etc? DVD/Hard Drive?

vmware convertor which is free will take a physical computer image to a virtual image. Then play it with vmware server/player or convert it to work on microsofts virtual pc/server.

This sounds great, does it work as the windows programme system restore? or could someone explain the difference, regards

Would an image taken with something like Acronis not just be easier?

That's what I've done. I actually got around to taking the "clean" image after my latest install but I'm thinking of going over it with an image of my drive now as it's not too messed up, but has a lot of new stuff on it.

my my music folder is a right mess, 100 gig of music, and 70% of it is just randomly named files

the ID3 tags are mostly okay, but...they're just odd files scattered about...

haha always happens to me

"ooo im gonna keep it clean this time round with no useless crap"

2 months later...

"ARG my desktop is full of crap, too many games installed and i hate it!"

format..

rise and repeat

I`m a heck of alot better than I used to be. I do these days try and keep my OS installs as lite as possible, and imaged.

I did think u were going to `have a go` about kit everywhere.. since ur not.. I`ll shut the hell up >.<

My memory keys and portable hard drives are always terrible, I dump loads of crap into a folder called misc, then comes misc2, then "random crap".

In the end I just end up deleting the whole folder. :D

I see where you are all coming from. My solution for this problem is to have more than one PC.

For example =

One for Storage

One for normal apps like Office and PhotoShop

And one for Hardcore gaming.

By doing this the games machine almost turns into a console as it can only game and browse the net. But because of the limitations it turns into a pure 1000bhp PC.

I had the pleasure of cleaning out my server the other day - Music folder arranged into bands. Then in the bands folder the albums. Perfect. Software drive took hours. Cleaned it all into easy to navigate folders. Yay me.
