DVD Drive Problems

Hi guys, i need your help once again. I´ve been having a lot of problems with my dvd drive lately. Bought 100 dvd-r discs by the name Princo about 2 months ago. There were only errors on about 6 of them. But then i bought 100 dvd-r discs of another brand about a month ago, and my drive made errors on over half of them. Now i tried a new brand of discs, someone called Moviestyle. I´ve burned 5 of them with no errors, but when i put them in my dvd player, they won´t start. Tried to put them in another dvd player and they still didn´t work. I though it might be the firmware, but i have no idea how to update it, and i don´t know the name of the model. When i use Pc Wizard 2005 to check what kind of model my dvd drive is, it says ATAPI DVD RW 8XMax, but that can´t be true, can it??? It says MSI on the drive itself, but can´t find anything about it on the net. Whoops, almost forgot to mention that i use the discs to burn movies. And yes it´s only for backup of my original dvd movies hehe :p My dvd drive is only a little over half a year old, but it can still be the firmware, right?? I really doubt that i´ve just been so damn unlucky with the discs. Please come to my rescue again guys :o

To be honest, it sounds like a Generic DVD+RW drive, or a "junky" brand.

My old I/O Magic 8x drive was actin up @ the end of it's lifespan similar to yours, but before you replace the drive...

Try updating the firmware...

also, what burning app do you use?

And what type of media are you using? +R, -R, +RW, -RW, DVD-RAM...what?

Some DVD Players might not like -R. +R seem's to be more 'widely accepted' amongst dvd players, old & new.

I gave up on Nero, I hate it.

I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5. :)

Answer = quit buying shitty ass dvds!

I would suggest using a different brand of media, you'll find that some burner's lasers are quite fussy when it comes to cheap disks. Sony DVD burners are prolly the fussiest of them all for example. I personally use Verbatim for both DVD and CD burning, and have never had a problem. As a last resort, check your manufacturer's website for a firmware update, or alternatively check places like the one I have provided a link for below.

For me personally - i've found any disks with a very dark dye work great on my Plextor, but ones i've had with a light dye i've had to write at 4x

Anyone else noticed that, or is it just my fussy drive!

ive only ever used one type of dye on my dvd-rw so wdnt know ;)

never been able to burn at 16x without faults tho

I didn´t buy that shitty dvd brand, it was in the computer when i bought it. I do wanna update my firmware, but how the hell am i supposed to do that when i don´t know the real brand of the drive??? About the discs, these discs are more expensive than those Princo discs that worked quite fine, so i thought they were even better, but guess not. A dvd burner should be able to accept more than one kind of brand, not fucking all other discs up. I won´t believe that 200 discs could be bad, but I don´t know if any of you guys have had the same problems. I use dvd-r discs, ´cause i read something about that some dvd players have trouble reading them. But that´s just some bs or what?? I burn the movies at 4x, it can´t be right that i have to burn them at a crappy 2x can it?? I really want to find out how i can update my firmware, ´cause i´m pretty sure that´s the problem. But again, i can´t update it when i don´t know where to find the driver, since i don´t know the product name of my driver. It says MSI on the drive itseld and ATAPI DVD RW 8XMax when i use Pc Wizard 2005 to check the hardware. But i can´t find a homepage for Atapi. If my new discs were bad, then wouldn´t they make errors?? ´cause they don´t, the problem is that dvd players won´t load them. I´m really lost on this one :(

Rofl. Atapi isnt a brand, its the typical connection / transfer protocol for most cd & dvd legacy drives. I suggest u just go and buy a new drive, sounds like its destroyed more discs than it would cost to go out and buy a new burner.

Frags that´s what i thought too, so it didn´t make any sense at all. Found the website for MSI products and checked my firmware, and it seems to be up to date, so i guess your right, i gotta buy a new burner. Any suggestions to what type of brand i should buy??

plextor is the way to go for the best. other than that lg is great never had problems myself. some say nec and pioneer are great aswell

Plextor, pioneer, sony, lg, nec, asus all make great burners. I have a matching pair of aopen drives and they are solid, havent had a misburn yet and they are bloody fast as well.

Yeah Dave, they work fine on the computer. Kinda confusing actually !? Frags tnx for the pointers, i´ll go and buy one of those brands ;)

ah, so they work on comp but not on dvd, now we are getting somewhere :)

what happens when you pput them in dvd player?

what exactly are you burning to dvd? do you have .avi files that you are converting and authoring? or are you ripping dvd's to your hard drive and then burning the video_ts folders straight to disc?

finally when you put the discs in your comp do they detect as "dvd video" or just a video disc

give me a bit more info on what you are doing, and we can sort this out.

really? most cd-rws will burn anything you throw at them (besides black cd-rs sometimes)

its only really with dvd-rws they get fussy. neway on topic til stinky replies

When i put them into a dvd player, they start to load, but never starts to play, and stops after about 5-10 seconds. i convert AVI files to dvd with Winavi, then i use the Nero plugin in Winavi to create DVD Videofiles. When the movies are converted they create the usual AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS, and i then add the VIDEO_TS files to the dvd and burn it. It worked fine with the Princo discs i used before, but there were a few compatibility problems with them, so i wanted to change discs because i didn´t wanted any compatibility problems. But those discs were crap, 50-60 burning errors. Insane. So i bought the new discs called moviestyle, with hopes of them living up to their name, but fooled again. When i put the new discs into my dvd drive it says DVD Movie. Help my Dave HEEEEEEEEELP!!! :(

PS: Is verbatim worth the money?? ´cause people say they are really good, but they are REALLY expensive in Denmark. Can´t buy shit without paying a million in Tax´es in this crappy country
