Yes Verbatim discs are nice... I've used plenty of em and they never give me any gaff... I also like imation discs, they work well for me 2

If one is serious about burning then choose a good brand of disk.

Verbatim and genuine Taiyo Youden.

There is plenty of crap out there

Burner wise I would choose a NEC or Pioneer - Pioneer tend to provide better firmware updates but NEC has excellent support and updates provided elsewhere. Plex tend to be way over priced
