Dual 580 3gb or 7970

prob a good idea to wait until we see benchmarks before trying to predict results, anyone remember the bulldozer hype?

Better to wait for more information on the R9 290X. We still don't know some of the specs, nor the price. Shouldn't take long now. Next week it will be available for preorder.

If the known specs are anything to go by and they are true... It's gonna be super awesome:D

I have no idea tbh. All i know is that this card was more designed/aimed at in performance of 1440p res. That's what it seems like anyway.

4gb of memory on a 512 bit bus, it better do good at 1440p! I just can't wait to see how well they overclock. The 7xxx series were amazing for putting under water and putting the balls to the wall, I just hope these new cards continue that. I've already got spots cut for a 420 and 480 rad cut into my case, and you bet I wanna make full use of those spaces!

Its still the GCN architecture so I think it should overclock like crazy. Unless the "efficiency improvements" mencioned in the livestream will limit the overclocking abillity of the cards.

its the best thing for the market when the brands leapfrog eachother. that way there is always competition to be the best. if only amd could get their processors to work as well as their gpus. it would be immense.

That would be great but AMD is turning its thoughts to APUs.

thats a shame but im not surprised. their dinky systems seem to be great for what they are. its just a shame how far back they fell in the performance end of the market. i had a old athlon that just chugged away no problems. it was only ever the nvidia mx440 graphics card with 128mb instead of 64 that gave the computer any bother. aah the good old days. when everything looked like ass and you didnt care

My thoughts exactly. I know a CPU architecture is completely different from a GPU architecture, but how can they do one so well and absolutely suck at the other? I guess you can't win 'em all.

or will potentially higher clocks and faster memory on the 780 give it the lead?

What I want to know is, how far R290x overclocks. The 7970 Ghz was already over 1000 Mhz (obviously) and that could get a pretty good OC on it, roughly 1200. If the R 290x being at just 800 Mhz w/o boosting and can overclock near as far as the 7970 can that would be HUGE. though I doubt it will, it will be interesting to see.

Under water, I think the R9 290X would to a GHz. Of course that's a 100% guess, but it seems to follow the trend. And I bet they'll have some auto overclocking to match Nvidia's GPU Boost 2.
