Does OC3D have a spare server?

If you do......i have an idea......bare with me and read on......

We could set up a asterisk server (voip server with a hell of a lot of functionality). We could then give each user a extenstion. Each user would have a software phone installed on there computer.

If say i wanted to contact fragtek. i would ring his extenstion, say 201. it would ring his software phone on his pc, if it's turned off or doesnt answer then i could leave a message, which he would see when he logs in.

Now asterisk is free and runs on linux which is free, the connections would be free as its voip over the internet. We could intregate it into the forums as i know XMS likes is PHP/Mysql.

Just an idea........what you think?

I was actually thinking of a voip server a while back so we could all chat to eachother.

I'll check out Asterisk to see if it'll work on our server (secure distro), but if you know of any others too, let me know.

asterisk isnt a distro, it can be run on many distro's though.

You can do pretty much anything you want with asterisk, conference calls.

check out http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/index.php?page=Asterisk for loads of info.

^ i meant our server was running on a secure distro (lots of things dont work on it)

And after checking, it looks like it could be a royal PITA to setup on our server as we'd need to disable stack smashing in the kernel and a few other things.

ah yeah forgot about the password thing, we could make it public, but make the clan channel private?

......whats teamspeak?

Its a voip server we use when playing Counter Strike matches. You basically all join a channel, and everyone in it can speak to eachother.

this sounds cool, then again there is skype and skype is rapidly getting really popular, ime even tempted by it myself tbh after i heard my m8 say he met someone on his holiday with it:rolleyes:

why not ellaborate more on what these "extra" features of that program are?

cheers.

Also as it is open source you can integrate this forum using php/mysql or pretty much whatever language you want.

Would i need to be on counterstrike to use teamspeak? As i dont have counterstrike, meaning in order for people to join in chatting, they have to buy it. What if they dont play games, they'd have to buy it just for that reason.

I'm just looking at otherways for us all to communicate, just a suggestion.

That looks pretty awesome. Something integrated would be the bomb for sure. Doesn't look like it would be an easy task though, our linux distro is probably one of the most secure available with a lot of the standard linux "fluff" deleted to prevent security holes.

Jim is a genious though, I'm sure he could get it worked out :)

i think it would be good, prob would take a little setting up, but the pay of maybe good. at least we would be the only forum on the net that allowed you to talk to your forum buddies.

I actually have a 75 man vent server that isn't used much anymore that I could set up for use like this. I just can't remember the info right now as I personally haven't logged into for the last 5 months :( It is payed up for the next 9 months as well. It is based out of New York iirc.

thats a lot of features,i am keen to see if jim will try this out:)

oh and btw no teamspeak is a stand alone program, you dont need css for it;)

cheers.
