Does it make sense.

Hi all,

Ok I am sure something like this has been posted before but I couldn't find any direct links to a thread.

So here goes:
I have put my own rig together:
I currently run a Sabertooth Z77 board with an i7 3770k@4.6GHz, 32GB Corsair Vengance, 2x120GB SSD, GTX 670 Direct CUII SLI with an OCZ 750W PSU.
Noctua D14 CPU cooler.

My questions is this:
Does it make sense to go down the route of watercooling for heavy video editing and occasional gaming. I hardly play games, only when I am bored.
I have an 800D which I got for very cheap off of ebay (£75) so I thought it was a no brainer in case I wanted to upgrade to WC.

How much difference would a WC setup (both CPU and 2x670 watercooled) make in terms of getting more out of my system or would it be better to stick with Aircooling and upgrade to a 2011 Mobo and potentially a Xeon processor/i7 3960x?

Would I even need one or both 670's for video editing (I can sacrifice gaming) and get rid of those and invest in a badass WC just for the block and a lesser GPU to power my 3 displays.

I know this has dragged on for a bit but i just wanted you guys to know my thinking.
Forgot to mention: I do care massively about silence (more like the missus cares about silence but you get the point ;)
Cheers

as the 800D is a hot box for air I'd wc it. But also wc'n isnt just for better temps its for that UBAR look at my slick ass build wow factor feeling. Plus in an 800D its a no brainer as well as that case will hold proper wc kit without major modding.

I see your point.
I am just thinking about the video editing side and wether it will help it (more OC and so on).
I am so tempted to WC it but I am on a limited budget and wonder wether it makes more sense to upgrade the system first.

If your a silence freek WC is literally one of your only options... If you just want to drop temps and have your baby looking PIMP, it's also an option ;)

I doubt you could get a much higher OC from your i7 though (Might be able to touch 4.8/4.9 if you have a good chip), since 4.6Ghz is already plenty high...

Watercooling will not improve your overclock by much and will not give you higher overclocks on the 670s.

I would save the money for 2011 gear.

That's what I have been thinking.
I have just managed to get the i7 3770k to 4.9Ghz with the Noctua alone and running stable for 12hrs with OCCT.
Vcore voltage tweaked and cpu voltage at 1.45V and tems would occasionally hit 90 but would stay about 77C most of the time.

Cinebench gave me 9.54 so I am wondering how much more i would get from 2011?

You can overclock higher on custom WC than on the best air cooling.

also, if you got that 3770k to 4.9 on a noctua, that means you got a good chip, and you need to treat it well like you treat your mother, give it custom wc and break the 5.0 mark.

The BEST thing about my PC post-watercooling was the SILENCE. Really, it was amazing. After that I'd say my GPU temps impressed the most - usually not more than 16c over ambient during testing - finally, my CPU at gaming loads is regularly under 35c over ambient.

I've not really pushed my clocks any higher for day-to-day use, just when playing around. It WILL be an expensive change if you water cool your rig though, make no mistake. I did it as a fun project as well as to silence my noisy GTX 570's - a single 570 was just fine, two together got noisy due to restricted air flow.

Of course watercooling may well let you really ramp up both the CPU and GPU clocks if that's your thing. Personally I'm happy at my fairly moddest levels.

Scoob.
