Disquiet V2 Build Log - Ryzen, GTX 1080, Jonsbo W2, Air Cooled

I have always wanted to do a black out build. Maybe one day I will. You know? like pure black on black, you can have any colour you want as long as it's black...*

*Yes, pedant, I am speaking to you and yes, I know black is not considered a colour :p

I was trying to go for that, but then with little bits of orange and grey here and there to spice things up a little. The white is a bit of a eyesore I think.

Yeah I only ever used white cables once. They were OK, but once the rig started getting dusty they soon looked a bit mank. Didn't help that they were paracord and not braided plastic like some cables.

I like small amounts of orange on black. It really pops :) Just don't get manic like I did and go crazy with the orange... lmao.

Ha! No, it'll be subtle orange hints. I consider adding orange vinyl here and there, but it would look too gaudy.

Pexon uses MDPC-X sleeving which is a plastic. My white cables haven't stained at all or tarnished in any way.

I'm quite jealous of this if i'm honest.
Can't wait to see it done.
I've been wanting to do an orange accented build since i saw the gigabyte x58 oc motheboard.
Does anyone remember it?

Thanks, mate.

The build is up and running. I spent all day today working on it. There were quite a few snags, but we're getting there. Pictures will be uploaded when I find the time. It doesn't look that good right now, especially the cable management, as it's not in its final form. It'll take another few weeks before it's fully finished and I complete the build.

One snag I can't seem to get around is one that's driving me up the wall—I can't restore my game files to Steam. I'm looking at the folders with all the game data, but Steam won't find it. I didn't back up the files beforehand because I thought you could just redirect the new installation Steam to the drives that hold the game data, but it's not working. I can't figure it out. Anyone have any ideas?

I wish i could help you mate, but i've had the exact same issue some time ago and ended up losing all saved games. Ever since i'm backing up everything. I'll do a wee search and see if i find something. Will either post or dm you if i do.

Well, that's concerning. I even backed up the game saves with Game Save Manager.

Thanks a lot for the kind offer.

I got it! I feel like an absolute idiot and should be hung, drawn, and quartered, but I got it; games are now being verified in Steam. Hopefully saves are intact.

The mistake was that I was trying to add the steamapps folder to the library rather than steamlibrary. It's a simple mistake, but I shouldn't have made it so many times.

haha I have done that so many times. I was literally sweating the first time !

Phew! Glad I'm not the only one. :p

I just ran Arkham Knight and my saves are all good. My previous system (4.5Ghz 4670K, Windows 7) hit 111 FPS average in the AK in-game benchmark. I quickly overclocked the 1080 to the same levels as before and ran the benchmark. I hit 109 FPS. So I lost 2 frames. That's with memory at 2400Mhz and the 1600X at stock. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get with some overclocking.

Some pictures progressing the last few days:

So, changes that will be made in the coming weeks:

  • Move the LED strip to the top of the case so the lights are pointing downwards rather than to the rear. Either that or purchase another Darkside LED strip and install it at the bottom of the case
  • Return dead BeQuiet fan and replace it
  • Purchase custom cables and completely redo the cable management including purchasing new heat shrink to clean things up
  • Work on air flow and fan curve. At the moment the system is very quiet, but it's not cooling as well as I think it could be
  • Overclock memory to 3200Mhz
  • Overclock 1600X
  • Purchase orange labels and add orange accents where appropriate
  • Remove hard drive label or cover over

Before building the new system I benchmarked Arkham Knight. With a 4670K at 4.5Ghz and DDR3 at 1866Mhz, I hit 111 FPS in the inbuilt benchmark. With the stock Ryzen system (memory at base speeds—2133Mhz I think—and 1600X at base speeds) I hit 109 FPS. Well, I woke up this morning and decided to give one of the DRAM profiles on my C6H board a try just for fun. It was a 3200Mhz CL 14 at 1.4V profile. It booted straight away. I ran AK and I hit 119 FPS. That's a huge increase especially at 1440p. Either that was all the memory or it was partly the FCU update that happened yesterday, or a bit of both. I've just purchased a copy of AIDA64 and I'm going to test the memory properly.

Edit: I was wrong. The memory was running at 2933Mhz (even though I loaded a 3200Mhz profile). Now I've actually loaded 3200Mhz and my scores are 122 FPS compared to the 111 FPS of my previous system.

109 FPS - Stock 1600X & Stock Memory
111 FPS - Overclocked 4670K & Stock Memory
119 FPS - Stock 1600X & 2933Mhz Memory
122 FPS - Stock 1600X & 3200Mhz Memory

Looks great mate. Nice and clean. Gotta love those Jonsbo cases, too. Keep the updates coming! :)

Also, have you noticed any difference in temperatures with that M.2 heatsink? I've been contemplating buying one myself, but I personally haven't noticed particularly high temps. Certainly looks the part, though.

Because the M.2 drive is only used for the OS and programs, it doesn't experience any heavy load. Temperatures during AIDA64 stress tests (CPU/FPU/Memory/Cache) were around 34°C. I imagine that's as hot as it'll ever get since it doesn't get pushed very hard with my limited workload.

Memory is running very stable at 3200Mhz 1.35V on BIOS version 1602 from ASUS. I've been quite fortunate in that area.

The GTX 1080 memory topped out at 12150Mhz. I backed it down to 12000Mhz. I have the core clock at 2025Mhz. I don't really feel the need to push it any higher. I may even drop it down to 2000Mhz, just because it's nice to have a round number.

Next step is to overclock the CPU. Then I'll start measuring for the custom cables.

Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on Ryzen overclocking? I've heard mixed reports. Some admonish C-state overclocking, something I've never done before, while others say that manual overclocking is fine even if Ryzen is not downclocking at idle. Still others say offset overclocking works well. And then you have the Ryzen Master crowd who are contented to use that. Any suggestions?

I haven't decided fully on what overclocking method I'll use, but it's likely I'll first try ASUS' method that's on their YouTube channel. It seems to be a simplified version of P-state overclocking that turns Global P-state Control on instead of manually setting them. As a side note, like a lot of other reviewers and early testers, they seem to think that 4Ghz is an manageable overclock for most Ryzen CPUs, something that is not true from what I can tell. If I can hit 3.9Ghz I'd be happy.

Another thing I thought I'd mention is the fan curves; I was having trouble with them. Because of the way Ryzen works, the fan speeds were varying widely even when under virtually no load. The fans would be spinning at around 300-600 RPM, I'd open a window in the OS and suddenly one or two of the fans would jump up to 800 or 900 RPM. My rear exhaust actually hit minimums of 300 and maximums of over 800 RPM, all while doing only the very basic of things. My fan curves in the BIOS weren't getting the job done, so I installed ASUS' Fan Expert, and surprisingly enough it's actually really good. I've been able to stabilise my fan speeds and keep the system steady. The speeds are overall slightly faster, but more crucially they are actually stable. I have yet to test them under load, but at least idle speeds are now consistent and noise levels remain audible but quiet. It's a nice bit of software.

A little development with overclocking.

I've been able to quickly overclock my 1600X to 3.95Ghz at 1.3750V. To recap what I did:

Enabled Global P-State Control
Disable Core Boost
Set an offset voltage of +0.025
Set P0 to HEX code 9E

AIDA64 CPU stress test wasn't a problem as far as temperatures go (I think I remember it being around 61°C), but running Cinebench really ramped up the heat. It jumped up to 71°C! AIDA64 FPU and CPU reached 75°C after 15 minutes or so. I wouldn't like to push voltages any higher without better cooling or faster fan speeds.

My Cinebench CPU score is 1322. My stock score with 3200Mhz memory was 1250. If you think about it, an 8700K hits 1410 at 4.3Ghz so the next iteration of Zen should be awesome. I know the 8700K trumps it in gaming, but it's nice to know I have a lot of horsepower in my system for relatively little money.

Gonna try and see if 4Ghz is stable. If it is, I'd be happy. It means I might be able to get 3.9Ghz running at much lower voltages, which would be better than 4Ghz at higher voltages I think.
