Discussion: Alcohol in the Army!

So me and my grandma have been discussing this for a while now. She's really stubborn so she won't admit that she COULD have been wrong. She's dead set on that it's not allowed to drink alcohol in the Army, but a friend of mine which is in the army says it's allowed in the weekends. So which one is it? Is it allowed or is it not? I tried Google'ing it, but I couldn't find a straight yes or no. But NOTHING pointed in the direction that it's not allowed. And keep in mind that different countries have different rules in the army. I'm talking about the Norwegian army.

And if you don't know if it's allowed or not, what do you think it should be? I think that drinking in the weekends is fine. They're bustin' their balls trying to protect this country with very little in return and they're not even allowed to chill out in the weekends? That would be straight up stupid. And also, my friend that's in the army says he's in a bartender course in the weekends since he's now done with his minder course (Rent-a-cop course

). He's known to be a liar so I'm not sure if the bartender thing is true, but I think it is. It does sound a bit weird, but the army in Norway is known to help people with education and such so it wouldn't surprise me if it is true. Just sounds a bit fishy.

And I know it's not very kind of me to say that a friend of mine is a liar, but he is known to lie a lot. As an example, he wouldn't give back my Xbox 360 this easter. He said he wasn't at home when he was at home with a friend of mine visiting... And I would come by to pick it up, so it wasn't out of lazyness.

Don't know about the Norwegian Army but it's definietly allowed in the British Army. There might be restrictions if you are on active duty and obviously you would get in trouble if you were getting yourself in a state every night and turning up during the day in a mess all hungover but it's defiantly allowed. Even in basic training it's allowed, I can remember getting bladder a few times when i did basic.

If it's allowed in the British Army it's definitely allowed in the Norwegian Army since the British Army see a lot more action than what the Norwegian Army does.

i had a drink in the NAAFI/Sgts Mess almost every night when i served. getting DRUNK is frowned upon and can lead to having to sleep it off in the glasshouse, and then being put on squadron orders

it never happened to me - but i knew a few who had to polish the urinals with their toothbrushes as punishment.

Even in wartime we are allowed. i got tipsy too many times to remember when i was in iraq

it helped calm the nerves

Yea its allowed, not on operations or during excercises but its allowed.

You are not allowed to drink during your first six weeks of training and if you are under 18 when you join (16 or 17) then you are not allowed to drink and the army will hit you with the book if you are caught.

Depending on what you are doing the next day you are allowed to drink during the week in the evening after work as long as you are not hungover the next day.

During the weekend you can drink all you want.

I still remember getting hammerd in Africa hanging from trees and landing in basted bushes wondering what the hell was going on ... Hmmm them were the times. I must have been really hammed a few times as the next morning i had tats hahaha mind you i did get the glass house for that as i was on gaurd the next day and couldn't do it because i got a infection

When in Germany well pmsl i still remember setting off for Amsterdam at 16:00 Hrs and getting back Monday morning at 6:30 ready for parade at 07:00 Hrs absolute hammered beyond belief.

There were a few times were i did end up with a GPMG above my head and being frog marched in the local river for being hammered while on parade but mind you so was the whole platoon so it never did phase me.

I wanted to Join the engineers but never passed my maths test so got the choice of either Army air corps or Infantry, i chose the latter which i kind of regret!.

Did you enjoy your posting in Germany? Me and my Brother were born in Rinteln and Berlin and lived there for most of our childhood as my dad was Staff Sergeant In the REME i really liked it.

Cant say the same for Iraq though, had it nice on telic 7 escorting brigadiers > from the Baghdad international airport to the Bsu inside green zone to camp victory and done the odd guard duties at the maud house.

Telic 10 was pretty bad, got attacked every time we left camp,my wagon got hit by 3 separate ied's one of them smashed through our warriors engine! Lad in my platoon was killed by a sniper after leaving his drivers hatch open on a strike op. Craig Barber his name was, will never forget that night. Couple young boys from my battalion Jamie Kerr and Scott Kennedy where killed alongside another Welsh soldier ( we were attached to 2nd battalion royal welsh at the time) by an ied, they were in another company from us and had been clearing the route for us leaving Basra Palace, we heard the blast from the other side of the city and though it was idf.

Went off the rail when i got out and was homeless for a year and lost my car, but at college the now doing a hnd in computing and going to uni next year so its all good.

In the end i'm glad i joined and wouldn't of change anything if i had the chance, Met allot of really nice guys and still keep in touch with a bunch of my close muckers from battalion.

Sorry for the long rant!
