Difference?

Hi there all,

Forgive my ignorance - but a couple of months ago I bought a new PC AMD Athlon 3000+

What 'should' the true speed of this CPU be? Windows reports about 2100mhz. I'm thinking of getting another new PC in a couple of months. Now do I go Sempron?

What's the difference, I can't seem to find much documentation that is straight foward on the net..

Any help would be great!

A Sempron is generally slower than an a64 Athlon, and probably slower than an XP 3000+, but show us that and we can help ya more

The new Sempron 64's on s939 are straight up gangsta chips for the price... The major drawback to Semprons are low stock clock speeds and a meager 256k L2 cache.

But... Word on the street is that these new chips overclock like mofo's! They're based on the exact same design as the A64's which most reliable overclock to 2.5+ghz. If you have the money I'd go with an Opty 146 / 148 which clock like mad as well.

A64 3000+ stock clock speed is 1.8ghz (200 x 9).

Ahhhh u have an AXP I thought u were running an A64...

You have a good chipset and a good chip it looks like. That should be a nice computer to get some overclockin' goodness out of.

Are you using the stock AMD cooler or do you have something aftermarket? Also, what's your CPU temp reading at idle/load?

Hi Frag, To be honest - The machine was built for me by a local PC firm. I have no real idea - It just works. ;-)

haha thats cool mate they seem to have used decent parts from what I can tell so far.

take off the side panel right quick and take a peek at the hsf and see if it's the aluminum crap cooler or something a bit better.

Its more than likely to be stock, only custom or gaming specific pcs will have a decent heatsink.

Right well to get some serious overclocking done you had better pop out and get yourself a Thermalright SI-97. Think thats the right model for the Barton Core
