Dead PC

Right, well my pretty much brand new PC has just bit the dust. Was running fine, turned it off to change some BIOS settings and it wouldnt even post.

Took sound card out, reset BIOS: nothing

Took 1 mem stick out, reset BIOS: nothing

Took out everything other than essentials: nothing

Tried with no memory at all: warning beeps

Tried other graphics card which is probably dead: wouldnt even do the first P5B fake startup

Multimeter on PSU: everything fine (not measured 3v)

Motherboard fan headers putting out 12v and mobo light coming on

Power on with CMOS on clear, put back: nothing

Tried all DIMM slots: nothing

Think thats everything tried. The downstairs PC once did the exact same thing and it turned out to be the HDD but i'm assuming that is due to Dells funky BIOS' (nevertheless ill go try). Basically I'm out of ideas, especially considering the randomness of the failure. I expect it is the graphics card but I can't rule anything else out at this moment in time :(

Are you getting any indication that the board is receiving power? Any LED's on, do the fans spin up when u press the power button?

Edit: I see u listed the mobo power LED comes on, that's a good thing... Sounds like the BIOS just decided to brick itself, which can happen. I think the first thing I'd do is get a replacement CMOS chip for it and try that.

Edit 2: Have you pulled the CMOS battery, disconnected all power, and let it sit for 30 mins then come back and try again?

yea man, board is powering up fine, the headers are putting out 12v, all fans and pump plugged into PSU directly fire up, the ASUS led whatsit goes its normal colour.

Edit: Where on earth am I going to get one of those?

Jim had the exact same problem. I also experienced some fun with the P5B

Take out all power leads. Put CMOS into reset position. Take out battery. Put 1 stick of RAM in furthest slot away. Take out all fans etc. Leave for 1 hour to stew.

Replace power leads, CMOS battery and CMOS reset switch but not fans. Power on and wish yourself luck

Tried both the above methods, no luck, will leave the batt out overnight and try in the morning but im not holding out much hope tbh. I hope it is either CPU or Motherboard because I can RMA them....
