Windows 11 Bricked GTX 980?

Okay,

So maybe a coincidence, maybe not.

The other night I attempted to upgrade to Windows 11, it failed and rolled back. Not much of a problem, until I realised my graphics card wasn't being picked up. Didn't think too much of it.

Re-tried Windows 11, and the same persists. Roll back to Windows 10, followed by the usual Safe Mode DDU. No joy.

I head into the UEFI and notice it's negotiating a bus speed of x8. I reboot the system to now see it negotiating at x1. Something is amiss, Windows now reports a Code 43 error.

I run a custom BIOS on the 980 that has worked flawless for as long as I can remember.

So within 30 mins of troubleshooting, I decided to flash the er back to its original BIOS.

Viola, back into Windows and it's picked up and works fine. However, now I don't have the second display out working, so that appears to be busted. The bus speed seems to be unstable per se now booting into the UEFI at 1x, 8x or when it chooses 16x. So I flash the custom bios and it appears to be working fine as before, however, the second output is still not working.

I know some of you may be thinking it maybe related to power savings with regards to the bus speed, however this is not the case as UEFI reports the card operating at said link speeds and the performance of the card is woeful.

I have ran numerous benchmarks, overclocked, stock clocks - the lot. The performance of the card appears is as expected and is stable at the moment, just no display out on the second monitor.

I have no idea what has triggered this, other than Windows 11 installing and failing hard :D

Perhaps the card is on its way out and it was well-timed.

Have you tried a fresh install?

Did you update the motherboard bios to the latest before starting the W11 upgrade?
