Crossfire defeats SLI in Doom 3 !!

Two chaps with strong arguments managed to persuade DFI to let them benchmark one of the Crossfire motherboards, the DFI RD482. Hard info was hard enough to do so and it manages to include guys from tweaktown into this risky operation. We are not sure what methods where included to get to the goal.

You have to bear in mind that those chaps manage to benchmark demo motherboard with first bogus drivers based on Catalyst 5.4 and that things are far from optimised. They chose heavily nvidia tweaked game that goes under the name of Doom 3.

Nevertheless ATI Crossfire with two X850XT cards was faster than two geforce 6800 Ultra or two GT cards, auch Nvidia auch auch.

Nvidia slept in bed with John Carmack for ages and even made a NV30 as the chap requested and still managed to lose from its red competitor. It would like just like seeing ATI losing in Half Life 2, the game it cost them almost six million dollars. It might happen you never know. I have to remind you that new Catalyst 5.6 drivers might improve those numbers even more as much as ten percent!

ATI is faster or tight in every single setting and I can expect that difference could be even bigger in biased games such as Half Life 2.

Crossfire looks good. All we want to see is how much is going to take the companies to pump it to the hungry market. You can get the scores http://hardinfo.dk/show.asp?desc=3582 << there.

Looks like Nvidia take the lead when they up the res though. Still impressive as it is Doom III we are talking about.

Thanks for the info.

dotn forget these are on didgy beta driver and doom 3 was specifically chosen as it is fully optomised for an nvidia video card!!!

As impressive as the scores are to me it means that 6 months down the line and ATI have an alternative offering to Nvidia.

Of course having already set the benchmark, ATI knew it had to be better than Nvidia to at least generate interest and (hopefully) sales of the new product.

People have looked at the Nvidia option, decided what are the pro's and cons of the system and built crossfire to 'tick' the boxes where Nvidia left gaps in the first release.

I know we are talking about doom3 here, but surely if you were the ATI guys, one of the first things you would do when sending out engineering samples (usually faster than the release) and beta drivers, is optoimise the BETA's to beat the competition, preferably in their back yard (in this case the yard is called Doom3)?

Is the stretch enough?

Based on those scores would you switch?

What is the cost comparison?

SLI 2 is in advanced development, the next generation of GF series is due out shortly.

For me it's a case of too little too late - but for someone just thinking of investing I am sure it presents another option on what to choose.

It would have been real disappointing if they had not managed to present Nvidia with some stiff competition - as it stands they have the edge, JUST.

Lets not forget this unit still has no Shader3 support.

All written IMHO.

but you dont need sli to run any game!!!!!!!!!!!!

so sli to me is all about how big yr internet penis is lol

if you can say my pc is better than yours then it is no diff than saying my car can go faster than ouyrs its all the same mentality and i think people who like to benchmark and have nice scores because

1. they can afford it

and

2. because they can prove they can or their hardware can do some one else's can't

look at me i am recieving cathers g5 pure silver block 2moz!! i bought it because of what

1. phil said about it

2. because ill one of teh firts in the uk if not the world

3. the pimpage i can give my self just because i own one

4. because the block its self has an ora about!! it its the ferrari of water blocks the best there is full stop bar non!!!!

thing is ill probably buy this board because i think ati card are better than nvidia especially when teh new x950xt come sout which can supposidly do 10,000 05 3d amrks alone, which means its all about whats next and who can what or owns what. i mean come on who needs two ultra extreme 6800's or even the 512 versions to play doom3 or cs:source ????

Coming to my conclusion is all about how bg yr internet penis is............. who can go faster or show off the most

ill no doubt buy one.....because i want one ;)

i hated SLI when it first came out, looking at all the benchmarks where SLI and single cards hadnt been split into two different catagorys so all the people without a clue and just had fat wallets looked pr0, i got so angry at that

EG ocuk 3dmark scores thread, there was one guy with a vmoded pelt cooled x800 and then 2 people with SLI and no overclock above him :( that got me miffed

I'm buying just one card from now on. No SLI or Crossfire for me. (he says)

yeah but he was second in world in aqua mark for a single x800 card!! that you can boast about

people forget sli si ok but single card clocks and proof off them is still something to show off about

Thanks for that Phil1193  ,

My internet penis is as big as the real deal!! :p

Looking at my bechies - thats BIG!! :D

Mate, we are an extreme site, high scores are part of the hobby we have and of course we like to share our achievements. Te competition is friendly and the friendships created are strong.

You FLAME the benchers and then go on to tell us all about a new silver thing your gonna get coz it looks nice and ur the first etc etc - thats the same buzz we get with our hardware too so FLAME urself at the same time.

The sharing of information is what the net was invented for.

I agree with some of the comments here about how fat your wallet is etc, and the guy who totally mods his kit and gets the best performance - we all want to see that, the things people have done wth some of their kit to go faster is fantastic and long may that continue.

Personally, to keep up with technology I try and keep things standard so that I can sell them on as such, the re-sale value is higher and the money spent on the new kit is subsidised by the cash back form selling on the 'old' kit.

We also want to see the best technology and how fast that is and who can get the most from that equipment.

The best way to do this of course would be to have benchmarking league tables of different styles of computers (dual core, dual graphics, single core, single graphics and obviously a few others mixed with those).

@ Phil1193 - If Benchmarking is not your thing, fair enough. If your into rigs, shiny things and stuff like that, there's a section here that you will really benefit from, other will benefit from your comments also

But people have been shouting about benchies since 3dm2000 came out and to be honest if you dont like what you are seeing - don't look and keep your comments at a more friendly level and keep your fixations with peoples members in the bedroom  .

Back to the thread.

There is no doubt Crossfire brings some much needed competition to SLI and that can only be good for the consumer.

Love it or hate it, SLI is already established in the market and crossfire has some catching up to do. I hope they do not suffer similar supply issues of last year (X800's, 6800's, SLI) !!

X950's GF7800's and SLI2 are just around the corner 24pipes of 3D heaven beckons - the comment about not needing SLI to run any of todyas games is right - but if you want the highest resolution, the prettiest picture and the edge when playing online Crossfie/SLI does have a use.

Even so, its been a while since graphic and CPU's have produced so much innovation at the same time - motherboard manufacturers must be pulling their hair out trying to keep up!!

If you were going to get a SLi/Crossfire then I doubt that you would want to be playing games at a resolution of 1280*1024 more likely to be 1600*1200, from the looks of things the Crossfire does better at lower resoltutions, although its difficult to tell how it will do at higher resoltuions until it gets a good set of drivers.

Thats a good point my friend.

At higher resolutions, which si what you want to use with your dual card set-up the crossfire is under-performing versus SLI - at lower resolutions the difference is only 4fps.

I guess it will all come down to price.

Mate,

Never ever try and type while spitting bullets, it ruins your ability to spell, and there you go talking about penii again??? :D

I did take offence to your post, any bencher would, if you read it again or perhaps ask one of your 'friends' to read it for you I am sure you will find it is offensive.

I am not sure where you are coming from, perhaps it's best to leave this one as it stands before one of us gets banned - of course you can PM me if you wish to continue this discussion, in the best interest of this site, I consider the matter closed :p .
