cpu no longer overclocking

Hi guys,

I know this is an odd question, but here it is anyways.

Can a cpu of become better or worse at OC over time? I ask this because my i7 2600k used to be able to run at 5.2ghz with ~1.42v, however I didn't really find it useful so reduced it back to stock. Now my PC just freezes after a few minutes of load even though it's only OC to 4.5Ghz. I did notice that my M/B had 3 bent pins so I replaced it with a new one, however it still cannot OC

The opposite occurred with my 290x, it originally couldn't OC past 1100mhz no matter how much voltage I fed it, yet now it is doing 1280hmz. ... All my components are the same.

My specifications are below:

CPU: i7 2600k
CPU: Sapphire R9 290x
M/B: AS ROCK Extreme 3 Gen 3 (old)
Maximus IV extreme-z (new)
PSU: OCZ ZU series 850W
RAM: Kingston hyper-x 2133 cl11 2133mhz (2×4GB )

Everything was left at stock except for the component that I was OCing

cooling is with a custom loop, there were never any leaks.

Your mobo is shit, the vdroop on those things in insane. Same with surges.

Get a decent mobo and then you will REALLY know if your cpu is borked or not. If it is then your mobo will have caused it

What motherboard would you recommend then? As the only reason I got the Asus Maximus IV extreme-z was because my retailer didn't have any other z68/z77 left

not entirely sure but he might have read that a bit wrong
as far as i know there's nothing wrong the the maximus 4
and yes, chips can degrade over time so they might need more voltage to be stable at a certain clock or get completely unstable

OK, that makes more sense. Also I realize that chips will degrade over time, especially with extreme OC, however mine is only about 2 years old and it's never gone past 50c or so, and it's always been on stock settings.

Also back to my other part of the question, can the gpu/cpu OC potential increase overtime or something? As it is really odd, I'm not getting any artifacts or anything during gaming and benches, compared to the past where it would artifact as soon as I past 1100mhz or so, no matter the voltage.

I only read the first mobo bit - didnt see he changed it!

You need to start from scratch and lean how to overclock it properly dude. We have done guides.

First of all I did not edit my OP at all, secondly I have overclocked from scratch, you dont reach 5.2ghz with 1.42v by randomly changing settings, unless of course you can then I guess im just not that good. I wouldnt be asking for help if the guides actually answered my question.

The only other thing I could possibly think of is that the new mobo is faulty too... and yeah I know it sounds weird that the card would suddenly be able to oc properly, too bad now that it can OC it is emitting coil whine, though its better than a card that cant OC.

Oh and hi Cru, noticed you in the MSI (questionable advertising) thread, thanks for participating.

hmm, yea I guess I should replace the PSU since everyone is advising it, though can I ask why do people fear this PSU? As almost all the reviews that rated it only have praise for it aside from the missing MOV (presumably to savev on manufacturing costs).

regulars on here generally dislike OCZ due to not being very reliable

I see, well I was planning on upgrading soon anyways, as I am going to go cfx 290x. Any good recommendations? currently looking at the silverstone strider and corsair ax1200i

the ax1200i might be a bit overkill as two 295x2 only pull about 1500w
however it is a great PSU and probably worth the money
RM1000 would also be a good choice

The AX series from corsair is great. Tom uses one in his test rig, so it must be good :) I also recommend seasonic psus. They seem to be really reliable and many companies just rebrand them.

1500W , dont worry I get what you are trying to say, I will take a look at the RM1000, if it doesnt work out then i will go with the AX1200i.
