Corsair HX series confusion

Yes I know it appears simple, hear me out

The 1000 is a couple of years old now and was reviewed highly. However the HX850 is much newer, from what I could gather better designed and generally appears to be the dogs danglies, from a price/performance standpoint.

So is the HX1000, even though it's a couple of years old, as good as the HX850, just with higher capacity?

Silence is golden to me, and that extra overhead from the 1k would ensure I stayed under 50% load and therefore in the realm of gentle hums. But if the cables are too short for super-tower sized cases and other good recent developments that have been implemented in the 850, would it be worth saving the 40 notes?

Or, unlikely as it seems, is there another high quality modular 1k-ish PSU for the same money? I know the CM 1000M is about the price of the HX850, but it doesn't appear to review as well. I couldn't stretch to a Enermax Galaxy or PCP&P (I can barely stretch to a Corsair HX) but as a great PSU will last a loooooong time then getting a great one from the off is obviously important.

Hi there VB the corsair hx1000 is one of the best psu's out there to date, it dosent mater if a newer version comes out etc there all the same but just come in updated boxes/ have diffrent gimmicks.

The Corsair HX1000 internals are Channel Well Technology who make the best/ high quality oem components & supply a few psu manafactures out there this psu also uses a new type of technology called "DSG" if i get techinal i'll prob make your head explode lol but it is very very very very very good.

PCP+Cooling psu's are good units but are not made by them selves there OEM is {Win Tact} and there psu's amongst other high end manafactures e.g. Etasis, Enermax, Zippy, Seasonic & FSP that manafacture there own stuff they degrade very quickly *sad face* i hope this has helped you with what to choose, & stick with the manafactures i mentiond above and you'll be fine.

Unless you have a really good reason to upgrade I'd stay stick with the 1000w. It's an ace PSU and PSU's don't become 'old-gen' nearly as fast as other computer parts.

I've only got a super generic 500w PSU (probably 300w really it's so generic) so was looking to upgrade for my forthcoming bday. I just wanted to ensure that the HX1000 was as brilliant as has been touted.

The 1000w is still the daddy and its not worth upgrading as such to the 850, but the jungle drums are beating about Corsair growing some bigger cahoona's in the wattage steaks so if you are number hunting Id wait a few months

If you've not already got an HX1000 then without doubt I'd choose the HX850w over the HX1000 any day. It's more efficient, ripple on the rails is virtually non-existent, runs cooler and I had it running at 1080w anyway

Even if you run it consistently at 100% load you wont hear it pipe up much.

That's not to say the HX1000 isn't a good unit btw - far from it. But my money is on the 850.

Much higher But the point is there really isn't any need for that much power in 99% of the PC's they are installed on. Therefore you're better off picking a lower-powered, more efficient, more stable unit that can, if required peak at a higher output.

I was going to get the 1000 watt but i whent for the HX 850W in the end got it from scan for £125 with free delivery to boot,very quiet and stable.

Something to note though, if your Corsair PSU goes wrong outside of a year (so the reseller won't take it back for RMA), you'll have to return it to the Netherlands. From the UK, and considering the weight of the package, this will cost between £25 and £30 most likely. It may be even more for the 850 or 1000 as they probably weigh more again.

I'm about to RMA my second HX620 and I'm not so happy about it!

Might be worth checking if any other reputable PSU manufacturers have a more local RMA base. I know BFG are in Wales but they don't make quite as good PSUs as Corsair.

If purchased from Scan you can indeed return it to us for the full life of the warranty.
