Considering moving to Linux

I am fustrated and annoyed by Window getting more and more locked down in what I can and cannot do with it, the latest is having Cortana forced on me when I dont even want it. Thus I am now seriously considering moving to Linux but there is so much to choose from by way of options (distros).

I did look at the 2 sticky threads above but to be honest they are quite old and probably out of date by now.

I would love to hear from others experience on using linux with a view to shifting completely away from windows and not even dual booting.

I use my pc for mostly surfing the net, watching youtube and gaming via steam so need something thats going to allow me to continue with those.
 
Not really an answer to your Linux question but you could always move back to Windows 7 if you want the Windows environment and aren't bothered by not having DX12 support.

Personally my favourite version of Windows due to the extremely large custom theme/skin community/scene.
 
I only have the option of going back to windows 8.1, keeping 10 or moving to linux.
I'm not willing to purchase another copy of windows now. I dont reallt need dx12 and with the developements of vulcan and other api no longer see dx as a must have now.
I just hate the way microsoft are focing things on the users and the amount of data mining they are doing covertly even though in my case its anonymous due to how I setup my OS

MS don't care they will continue to push things on us consumers regardless, one of the reasons I am fed up with them.


Linux Mint downloaded, think I will do a dual boot and run for a couple weeks since Linux is totally new to me. Just need to figure a way to get the 2 extra recovery partitions back together with the main one so I can shrink that and then install linux
 
It won't be a really big deal tbh. People complain about it but really Siri is always on and so is Google Talk if you enable it. It won't be any different. And anyways, i'm sure Windows Ultimate Tweaker will have a way for you to permanently disable it yet again. Simple clicks and restart, problem solved.
 
I hate the fact that despite disabling cortana it runs in the background anyway and the only other way to rid myself of it results in disabling the search function in windows as they are tied together, that and the data mining MS do
 
Linux Mint or if you want a more Mac OS like interface then Elementary OS. However depending on what games you're playing you may be disappointed by the selection of games available at the moment on Linux.
Aside from maybe not having access to some of your games you'll have no issues switching to Linux tbh, it's just a matter of getting used to the interface.

I started watching this video the other day, didn't finish it so don't know if you need specific hardware for it

Has anyone tried it? I'll have to try it out of curiosity when I get some free time seeing as games are the only thing keeping me on Windows.

You mean like every other tech company in the world? Honestly people overreact. They take far less than FB or Twitter and far far less than Google. Yet people don't seem to mind that...

Also, you can disable the "data mining" they do.

Just watched that it is intended for Skylake and is more about running windows in a vitual box and using hardware passthrough.
I am inclined to run a dual boot system for now till I figure things out.

Thing is stuff keeps getting put back, I do not mind fb and the others as I agreed to it as its use. I do feel that my PC belongs to me after all I paid for the components and put it together and "Paid" for the OS yet MS seem to feel the need to take control of my PC and dictate what and when they can put on "My" PC.

I am not overacting tbh, its something I have become more disillusioned with over the years since Win XP, I want control of what updates I get and when I get them, I am sick of removing things only for them to be there again a week later and I am sick of having stuff on my PC that I cannot remove simply because MS wants it that way. I have today noticed I have Nvidia stuff on my PC as well as Intel studd on my PC and I have neither products in my PC as its all AMD.

Would be nice if there was at least a sexy looking humanoid animation (havent actually seen what the Halo one looks like).

Jokes aside. I wonder if anyone has found Cortana to be useful yet.
 
Well I have taken the plunge and gone with Manjaro which is arch based not the ideal choice for a linux noob but hey ho.
I wiped my ssd and installed a fresh win10, activated then shrunk the partition and put manjaro on the other half of the drive so I can still slip into windows when the need arises.
Must say I am more than impressed with this OS so far despite a few minor teething problems I am up and running and the best bit is I can still play Hearts of Iron and with better frames.
This linux looks clean and uses a heck of a lot less in terms of recources and feels a lot faster aswell so all in all after 24 hours using it I am well happy
