I tune into the Olympics an odd bit for different events, but today's triathlon was mega impressive. Fair play to Alistair and Jonny. Jonny bagged bronze even though he had a 15 sec penalty!

Anyone else tune in?

We're doing so well this year.
My two new favourite athletes are Sir Chris Hoy and (hopefully soon to be Dame) Jessica Ennis.
'Inspire a generation' is bang on.

Damn, it's so easy to get penalized

I'm not from the UK myself but it's good to see top class performance from the British athletes. We only seem to be pulling success from the Women's boxing

We have done really well and it will inspire a lot of people to take up new sports and not just sit clicking 'new posts' every 10 seconds :L
A mate of mine and my old economics teacher both do triathlons and did the same one as Johnny a while ago. The teacher said when he was doing like his 4th one, Johnny was there to - my teacher was 19, Johnny 14 - and Johnny set the new record on that track by like 10 minutes. Just goes to show how good they actually are at these sports.

Also, I do think it shows that footballers are over-rated. Considering they walk round a pitch most of the time, and complain about being tired before even lasting 90 minutes - yet these go 2 hours of incredibly intense work and don't complain whatsoever.

The world needs cyber athletes too! haha keyboard gymnastics is the future. 10 minutes in any sporting event is huge. At 14 though? Some people are just naturally superior, athletically. Agreed on footballers. One would wonder why they earn what they do.

The American swimmer that broke a world record was like 15 years old. Like...whaaat?!?!
What do they feed these kids?!
The gymnastics also astound me. Doing backflips on a platform 4 inches wide? Nah...that's just not right.

So my teacher said yeh :)

They earn what they do because economically they should. There arent many of the professional players around and so supply is limited, and due to crowds and clubs wanting to watch and being willing to pay the money to watch - they're paid at exactly the right amount.
Exactly the same reason for soldiers being paid little compared to footballers. There's a massive supply as it's relatively easy to get in, and a lot of people are willing to join. But, there isnt a big demand for soldiers at the present moment in time anyway, and so demand is low. At the end of the day, everyone's paid right, as it isnt determined by what they're doing, but just by how much other people want them to be doing what they're doing if you get what I mean.

It's a shame in a sense as it puts people off sports like Athletics because it's very hard to make a living unless you're very good and earning lots through media and sponsorships. I know a silver and a bronze medallist from the olympics from a few years ago and they struggled to fit training around full time jobs. It's now a different case as the competition from the likes of China is so fierce that they have to train all day every day and so they dont have enough time to fit in jobs, and so many really struggle to survive just from the little sponsorship they get at the amateur levels and so have to cut back on training to fit a job around it, which completely limits their chances of getting to a high level. Unfortunately because of this, it leaves the vast majority of the top athletes only being able to make it because their parents have had enough money to fund them through it - and so the sporting world is still massively dominated by the middle classes in these more niche sports such as athletics, sailing, rowing, and even bigger sports such a tennis is still massively dominated by the wealthy.

At least the government is now vowing to do more to help spot talent and give necessary funding to those who cant afford it themselves.

the day before yesterday that man who run at the 400m (semi-finals) who had also joined the Special Olympics. true grit .

edit : just found it , his name is Oscar Pistorius

I was watching a report on Chinese gymnasts too. They are trained from age 2! There was something disturbing about it though, the children were in pain and crying. Their bodies were forced beyond their limits by their trainers. Anything for gold huh?
