Computer turns on but screen is blank.

Hey guys,
i Built a computer all the way back in 2009 (you should be able to see my rig in my signature), as title says computer turns on but screen is blank.

Details: Long time ago (actually 3 days ago), my Antec 3 Speed 140mm fan's controller decided it don't wanna manage fan speed anymore and wants the fan to be at minimum. So i decided to fix it (I know very bad idea). I took the fan out ripped open the controller and connected all three cables together and fan worked fine on full power (i dont mind noise).

what has gone wrong? (you might ask)
Well after taking the fan out, i turned my computer on. Plug the fan in to see what speed it will run at, without any wire touching each other. then i unplugged the fan (pc running fine) and put 2 wires together. plug the fan again and it ran on medium. then i unplugged it again. and my pc shutdown. (didnt really thought of it much) Then i put all 3 cables together and turn my pc on plug the fan in. fan ran on max. so for so good. so i unplugged the fan, to put it properly in the case and my pc shutdown agin. after plugging the fan i turn it on and my pc will only come on for a few seonds before dying again. after trying so many times, it finally stayed on but nothing on the screen. :'(

some extra details: though all of this process my monitor stayed off so i dont know if it was displaying anything. Also when i leave my pc running, motherboard VRMs get hot (more likely warm), cpu heatsink stays cold but the metal thingy on the other side of the motherboard (behind the cpu) gets warm. gpu heatsink is neither warm nor cold. Also when i turn my pc on, no signal thingy from my monitor goes away but then come back a few seconds later.

things i have tried:
1) clear cmos
2) tried my mates gpu same problem
3) tried his psu same problem
4) tried taking the ram out, same problem

any help will be appriciated

i dont know if i do, and i also cant remember if my motherboard ever beeped. but i can tell you there is no beep now. even without gpu and memory. but all of the fan attached to the motherboard works fine (might be helpful)

You may not have a speaker on your board as that seems to be the norm now.

What you will have however is a speaker header that you can connect one to.

I would check the 8 pin CPU plug and make sure it's in firmly. Then check the 24 pin.

If all else fails I would take out the CPU and check the socket for bent or damaged pins. If not? sounds like the motherboard has gone home.

Edit. Scrap the last one (CPU pins) it sounds like you overloaded a fan header and damaged the power stages on the motherboard.

hmm but i was plugging the fan directly into molex what does motherboard have to do with though? (porbably a stupid question)

Just tried everything except psu and gpu because i dont have a spare psu that fits and it didnt have a gpu in the first place. I tried swapping the vga cable but that didnt seem to make a difference. In the process i got an electric shock off of my tvs aerial and my finger smells like burnt waffles. But more importantly i still cant get any display out of the pc.

thats the thing why is motherboard appeared to be dead, or it is not dead and i am doing something wrong

All I can think of is that when you plugged it into the PSU you caused a short that's fried your motherboard.

That's got to be the only thing left considering it was all working fine before you did that.

Mind you saying that I've wired fans wrong before (being tired) and have actually blown the motors on the fans with an audible pop and stink of smoke but didn't damage anything else.

Does your PSU have any kind of short protection?

Sometimes other components will have fuses that self reset when any faults are removed. This can take a while in some cases. Have you let the PC sit for a while before retrying?

Something to try... Remove ALL components that are not necessary for normal operation. If your PC works, start plugging them all back in one-by-one until you find the culprit.

what you are saying happened to me before, some time my computer turn on and off again repeatedly. 2 ways to fix that was to hold the power button down and if that don't work wait an hour or so and then turn it on by holding the power button for couple of seconds. but i never had PC turning on and showing nothing.

PS: I am really hoping someone either tell me how to fix it or tell me how exactly i blew my motherboard.

I've also had it happen to me before, and i too was plugging and unplugging hardware whilst the system was powered on. I checked everything several times but it wouldn't power on, though some LED's light up when powered on at the wall. I left it and came back to it another day it just started working again. I can only put it down to a self-resetting fuse... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resettable_fuse

Are you using the rig in your sig? IE psu?

You could have blown your motherboard because you could have caused a short on the 12v rail that supplies power to your board.

The 12v rail usually ends up on one solder point on the PSU (IE all yellow 12v wires are soldered into a large clump at the PSU end).

If you cause a short on the 12v line it could send a surge down the entire 12v feed for your PC, hitting the 4/8 pin EPS or the 24 pin (there are 12v and 5v lines in there).

Motherboards have a lot of very sensitive components on which is why when a PSU goes pop it usually takes at least the motherboard with it.

I have had this prob in the past with more than one mobo and to fix it I unplugged all USB connections. This worked more than once on more than one motherboard so give it a try if you haven't already.

just tried it no luck

right my brain is exhausted so i guess i am gonna accept that something smaller than my fingernail has broke my pc
