sorry i haven't posted on here in a while, just been a little busy with school and dev work :(

there isn't a modding section so here goes:

The previous owner of my nan's car installed:

2x JBL gto936e 6"x9" (100W RMS. 300W peak)

1x Sony CDX-L450V car stereo

My nans car is due to be scrapped, so i called dibbs on the sound setup and ripped it all out on tuesday.

I could start using the speakers straight away with my guitar amp - I removed the current POS speaker and wired up the 2 JBLs, worked like a treat apart from the amp being single channel (mono output) =/, although it's not much of a problem.

Reading the stickers on the stereo, I found that it required 12V, 10A

so £5.49 and 2 days later this arrived:

(250W ATX power supply [used] WORKING)

To power the device all that's needed is 2x earth (black) and 1x +12V (yellow) and power on (green) from the mobo connector on the power supply

wires needed from the power supply, to turn on the power supply just twist a black and the green together and as long as they stay together the psu will be on.:

the required wires to the device are: 1x continuous power input (yellow), 1x switched power input (red) and 1x earth (black), the rest can just be covered with electrical tape(as below)

IT WORKS!

I don't think i'll be investing anything into a 2 channel amp just yet.

total project cost so far: £5.49

on my list for project:

a decent-ish switch (for psu)

some cathodes (as requested by yarde)

materials for "chassis" in "beta set up"

notes:

I must say, that PSU is the quietest PSU i have ever heard!

project level of difficulty: easy

Not bad matey, especially at £6ish. I'd say get some spare wood and make each speaker a cabinet, you should be able to get some rough idea of the internal requirements for it off the web and it's easy enough.

thanks, and i'll get designing some boxes right away =D

-----minor update-----

just made it a bit more ghetto by adding this temp switch xD

and to make it easier for me to remove speakers from the setup i added a pair of those little twisty screw joiner things (can't remeber what they're called :P).

also used some to replace the twisted wires covered in electrical tape in this pic:

Ghetto :D I like it

What are you going to use it for?

media centre output, when the bloody parts arrive >.<

it will look better in the coming months, need to get making some cabinets then the chassis for the thing :P

project buying on hold for ~270 days

as i need to save up for the second lot of media centre parts, then after that i need to save up for florida spending money (march)

then i'll have the money for the rest of this project

--what i may need to but to complete properly--

proper 2 channel amp

another psu for amp (if car amp)

spray paint

I wouldn't spend lots of money on it tbh, you're better off buying house speakers, car speakers are designed for just that. Good for a fiver tho ;)

Iwouldn't want to spend too much on it, I'm skint after just spending loads of dosh on media centre parts

i've decided 2 channel makes all the difference, so i'm going for a £12.90 2 channel mini amp :P and toggle switch - £0.99.

I have everything else to "soup it up" so that's all good and done =D

Tried this myself some years ago with pretty good results. Instead of a player I was using a player sized full equalizer. Electrical tape ftw.

Always felt it was a shame car stereos weren't 5.25" wide.
