Chiller's Hybrid Level 10

i understand the drawback of ssd, and trim is also important for me, so i hope REvodriveX2 will have someday TRIM option

Well you can always put in another one for every day non extreme performance

Smaller ones can be picked up for peanuts now

Last post on trim and sorry chiller.

I said there is no trim in raid, no need to explain that as I know it. There are now quite a lot of SSDs that have garbage control some more effective than others and it works independent of the OS. It has nothing to do with trim and works on the SSD it was discussed in another threa here on the Kingston SSDs I think. If you buy SSDs with good garbage control then the loss of trim is negligible as the drives are able to keep themselves in order if left idle and allowed to work. Therefore your information is old... Or for SSDs without good garbage control, check out the newer kingstons and such. People have had them for a few months and left them idle for a night or so a week and they have experienced little degradation compared to SSDs in raid without the decent garbage control.

@Chiller the build is coming along massively, very nice

As of now as far as I am aware (because the Kingstons have not launched yet?) there are no SSD that have a garbage collection utility onboard. They simply do not exist. As I explained elsewhere the only ones that may have it already are the Intels. And that's only the Intels. Sandforce does not and that includes the Revodrive. There is no way to get any kind of garbage collection going on those. Right now Sandforce drives have the TRIM command in their bios for a single drive. When you negate to use that controller and put the drives into RAID you kiss it goodbye.

Also I would like to know who these 'people' you refer to are, and who 'they' are.

I bought a Corsair X32 in January. It did not support TRIM. I benched it three times one after the other with ATTO and by the time I was done performance was down 60%. When you benchmark an SSD large chunks of data are written to and read from before it all being deleted at the end. An SSD works with cells. However, unlike a hard drive that you can defragment and rewrite 0 clusters over the 1s you have written you can not do that with an SSD. So the more you read and write (and delete) from one the slower it becomes. People have tried to stop the drive reading and writing to maintain performance but it doesn't work. Temp internet files, temp files and folders will all be created and deleted by Windows. To try and combat this I put on Vista (no point in using 7 as my drive did not have TRIM) and cut the absolute crap out of it. I then stopped everything I could from reading and writing to it and within 60 days it was crawling.

So whoever has told you that TRIM can be gotten around and fooled is a moron.

Don't trust reviewers unless they are trustable. As for the Revodrive? well, here is clipping of a review I read recently.

While the performance of the Revo when handling compressible files (as in the ATTO test) is fantastic, the obvious performance drop that hits the Revo following heavy use is a huge cause for concern. Following heavy use, the card was actually slower than a Crucial C300 128GB. Having spent the last year worrying about getting TRIM support onto its SSDs with firmware upgrades, for OCZ to release a product that resoundingly ignores it is baffling. Even more worrying is that because the drive controllers sit behind the RAID controller, it’s extremely unlikely that OCZ will be able to deploy firmware upgrades for the Revo.

Emphasis added.

The info about the revo is new and good, didn't know that. Shame really hopefully with ocz's problems they might still do something however possible or unlikely it is, good luck with that Chiller!

About the rest I'll leave it but I've seen enough to validate it for myself on a few drives, but it's not an area of interest so I won't be looking further. If you don't think any drives right now have GC then Alrighty

. I don't want to do this in anyone elses thread again. Apologies once again Chiller and keep up the good work!

Honestly dude I'm not being an Ahole or being argumentative. TRIM is an absolutely (pardon the namesake pun) crucial thing for an SSD to have.

I don't know if I can backflash my Corsair but believe me if I could I would. Just to show how bad it really is.

I've actually spent money to try and prevent people wasting their money (see my Quadfire experiments).

habe taken the front panel connector of my old intel skulltrail mobo (dremel in mobo)

svkufs.jpg

And used this connector in my slim drive bay of lian-li, together with the ECP panel i cutted up,

so that i can hoop up the ECP panel cable of mobo in my dvd drive, and from here everything will be splitted to debug lcd, power and reset switches and cpu/PciE disabled switches

oh0n7o.jpg

and hhere you see it, connector for ECP panel connector that comes from mobo, and connector for power and reset switches :

also the halve of the cables is managed, have some more cables to do and connectors to solder.

Have also the Koolanc TMS-200 controller build-in the case and hooked up the first cables and sensors

little update :

i'm still waiting on some small packages to arrive:

Sata slim line dvd RW drive :

Sata slim drive adapter to normal sata :

adapter on it screwed :

red smd-led strips for some light inside the case :

3x Nexus air-beamers for 80/92mm fans, also here comes a nice mod with in the case,

also some 3mm led's , 1 for the freezone V1 cooler, the other one is for in SB of Mobo full cover block instead of the stock blue led's :

As you can see in 1 drive bay in my rig can hold more then 1 item , is multi functional :

Debug lcd

clear cmos

EVbot connector

disable cpu's/PciE's

HDD for extra space

and dvd drive itself

Wait... Did that Skulltrail work before? lol, expensive way to get a front panel connector if it did
laugh.gif

Nice going though man, like the DVD drive mod. Really starting to take shape

Just a few words....

I WISH I HAD THAT RIG!

You've put alot of time and effort into building it.. nice job.. keep it up.. i wonder what you got coming next!

i whanted first the disable PciE and cpu switchen what are jumpers on the evga ECP Panel in the front panel.

But i changed my mind, so nobody can fidle with them, i put them on the back of the dvd drive next to the connector of it.

drive bay is ready, now with the PciE and Cpu switchen on it.

ready to build in and make the front plate of grey smoke :

drive bay is finished, now only makinjg the front plate, grey smoke acryl,

here you see the connectors for power power led reset and reset switch

cpu and pciE disable, ecp connector to mobo,

and in front the Evga EVbot connector, debug lcd and clear Cmos switch :

Busy on the clean front plate of grey smoke acryl.

Now made the EVbot connector in place,

only the dvd cut-out and clear CMos and offcourse the drive bay PSU needs some fresh air to.

The outside needs to be finished at the end :
