Cheap, low power CPU for a Home Server

Looking for a very cheap CPU from either camp. I would like it to be ~£20 and be ideal for use in a home server running backups every day for our personal computers and my dads work computers. I don't mind what socket either as long as the motherboards aren't too expensive.

Well, £20 is really tight from either camp, but pretty much the cheapest Intel CPU available is an 1155, 2.7GHz Dual Core chip called the Intel Celeron G1620.

If you don't mind going second hand then you can get a cheap dual core 775 CPU with a no nonsense motherboard for fairly cheap. Athlon II x2s and Semprons can be found for £20 or under too so they are also a good option if you want to have the most performance for your sort of price range. Motherboards for either camp will be cheap but the cost of DDR2 ram and the smaller modules might be a bit of a deal breaker with the 775 stuff.

I had a look at the Athlon II x2 255 for £25 on ebay or I could get a 240 for just £18, and since I am desperately trying to make this build as cheap but actually useful as possible. I also found a MSI 760 motherboard for £25 taking me roughly up to £45-£50.
I already have hard drives, a case and cooler, so all I really need now is a PSU and some RAM. I don't really want to skimp but if I get something like a corsair VS350 then I am looking at an extra £35 and for Ram I suppose it varies as I'm not quite sure how much I will need.

I suppose it depends on exactly what it will be used for but I would inagine 4GB should be enough for you if you want to keep costs down. But yeah that PSU sounds fine to me mate. I believe the motherboard has onboard graphics too so you don't have to spend on a separate graphics card.

I had a celeron in my home file server. NEVER AGAIN ;-;. I'd say a pentium at least. You might strike lucky and pick up an old i3 540 for that money used.

The main thing I was looking for was low power but I was just hoping that I would get one cheaper than £20. It will be on the vast majority of the time so I think the small amount more initially will even its self out in power usage.

I recently saw APOLLO by alpenwasser and saw that he was using LGA 1366 L5630 quad cores with a 40w TDP. I found one of these on ebay for £35 and was wondering if this would be better than the i3 in terms of performance and price/watt?

Oh and, thanks for the 4GB recommendation for the RAM, looks like I could have the build up and running for just £100 +-£10.

Thanks for the responses guys.
