"Chat" box/section

Hello. I think it would be nice to have a chat section somewhere where people can talk about anything. It would be good to be able to chat to people and also ask quick questions, that perhaps aren't suited to having a dedicated thread.

Maybe put it in general discussion? lets face it, no one wants to see the chat box top and centre on the main page.

What do you think?

personally i don't agree with this as I see it being a mess with everyone asking questions at the same time and no one knowing who is answering their question. also i think it will be harder for mods to monitor for spam.

sorry lol

I asked this before, I believe there was one before but it added little to the site, and for various other reasons it was removed.

I don't know, I prefer the forum format as opposed to chats. Chats get way to convoluted real quick and a mess to keep up with. I doubt Id ever use it.

Agree.

Maybe a chit-chat 'How-was-your-day' chatbox would work, but then again it wouldn't really add anything to the forums and it might end up being used the same way as Maniac just described.

I could live with some sort of official OC3D Ventrilo room, or whatever chat program works well for groups that anyone can join.

Some interesting opinions.
These things work fine on other forums I'm a member on.

I think it'll only be rinsed to fuck until the novelty wears off a little.

The thing about using forums is that advice and solutions are archived for others to search for and allow people to find these without starting a new thread, reducing repetitive questions.

^ Absolutely. But this would be more of a social chat, and for small simple questions. For example, i just started a thread asking where to find DirectX 10. Now i don't think that really needs to be archived.

Quite the opposite. What happens when someone else wishes to find DX10?

Threads which ask how you are, what you're up to today etc. are perfectly welcome in the off topic section. That's what it's here for, and no one's going to get annoyed by a thread being posted there.
Any other computer related question, big or small, belongs in the other sub-forums of the site. Chipped a tiny bit of paint off your old graphics card, and you're wondering how to fix it? Create a thread.
Supermassive boot loop which just can't be stopped? Create a thread.

It's what the community's here for :)

Ok. You guys have been here much longer than i have so you obviously have a better idea of what will and won't work on this forum.

I think something similar to this may be good for the site/community.

If there was a section like that, then agreeing with others, it would probably kill the forums. But then again, nobody is going to open a thread in general discussion to ask someone how they are.

But, I do think something inbetween could be done.

Let's be honest, the current PM system is pretty terrible. The auto-quotes just get annoying.
If something could be improved with that though, I do think it would help the 'community feel' of the site.

Even if it was like a live chat, similar to facebook chat/skype/MSN, and maybe for only well established members to prevent any kind of spammers. That way, the well established members would know it's just for general chat rather than asking questions, and therefore wouldn't detract from the forums themselves.

I guess it would be quite hard to set up though.

A facebook type chat for our friends on the forum would be pretty cool but everybody in the forum on one chat wouldn't work.

Not being funny... (Oh OK go on then I am, Asperger's coldness coming up...) but surely we all have our friends and use some sort of chat client?

If you guys are looking to talk to each other just start a bloody thread and give each other your Yahoo/Skype/Insert client here usernames and be done with it.

All that will happen though is that you will end up not posting to the forum.

I don't want to sound like a know all but I have been running forums and chat groups since 1999 when I used to have an MSN board and chatrooms (such as IRC and what not) simply took away all of the forum banter.

It's hard enough these days (thanks to Facebook) to even have a busy forum, why would you want to go and screw it up?

We had one before, it got abused and the mods spent longer telling people off than anything else.

It actually had a negative effect on stats because people started asking questions in the chat than starting threads.

Because it would need monitoring and some people just cant handle having restrictions and rules we wont ~ever~ be having one again.

Threads mean people reading them and replying. That in turn means page impressions and that means banner impressions. Banners aka: adverts are how the site makes money.

No money, no site. Simple as.
