Chain-link fence (and etc) rant !

Why do chain-link fences always seem to break away like sheet/squares ?

Racing games, fps, whatever - and in alot of fps u can`t shoot through em, meh ?!?!

Where`s the physics ? Where`s the crumple up at the point where u hit them ?

Similarly with stuff used as walls - break the wall, it falls away as a sheet/square.. what about the bricks ? What about the dented coregated sheets ?

AND ! WtEf with the stoopid physics on those freakin cans/bottles that are almost always on the floor ?!? If u walk towards/over such a thing, it doesn`t bounce off u and/or rotate sillily, u step over it - OR kick it realisticly, where it would dent or smash if it`s glass.

bah! Game devs.

Dude, give em a chance. Physics is really still a young concept in games. And to produce real world physics on EVERYTHING would be a ridiculously hard task.

They'll get there eventually.

Bah it`s lazyness.

Physics aside - I`ll use pseudo physics:

Instead of using 1 mob for a fence, I`ll use 100. (as a comparison characters can take 1000s wrapped around a wireframe). Point of impact for the 10x10 makeup for the sheet of fence will be mapped from an animation that goes from flat to broken or dented.

Thereafter, when u hit this fence that was 1 mob, the direction it flies can stay the same, but the 10x10 map I use won`t be the same graphic all through it`s flight, the part where impact occured will change as it flies.

End result, I`ve taken away the flat crap and given a bit of realism.

fffff ffff fffff (heavy breathes from an exhausting rant)

Played a few games this week and some stuff was annoying, as a critical natured person.. that was 1 level of grrr.

Now today I watch some review of a game out/coming called something like Breakout version whatever, played on the 360/ps3 I took from the breif button things popping up - same ole deal, lots of racing, `nice` scenary, great looking cars - AND cars that unrealisticly crumple as u hit them in slo-mo!! lmao - but with the deal u get to do stunts .. and one guy drove through a fence and it broke away in 1 piece. ??!"£££!"$%£%T^pkor!

For a PC to calculate all physics then u wud need some bad a$$ hardware, something that not everyone can afford.

Nah ur making excuses for them :p

It`s pure shoddyness.

Use that extra core, bluff it with animated textures instead of 1 constant mapping.

There are ways to do this outside of calculating each of the 1000 links in a fence.... which would be nice. lol

If they all did what you wanted we wouldnt see new games for years.. if all games due to come out stopped and decided to add physics on everything, there would only be a handful of games, look at the LONG time between far cry and crysis, there has been years of developing..

Yep, pretty true. Cept I offer to bluff it by taking physics out of it and doing simple anim, which is more than do-able.

Imo that`s more down to devs being 100s/1000s of people these days working on 1/2/3 projects.

I tend to feel u get a better game with less dev people, but more importantly dev people who know what the "F" they`re doing and don`t have to compremize on things they want to do but can`t coz some dip who`s got a nice degree but knows nowt about gaming. Industry is full of these people.

How many times u seen an outstanding game product, get engulfed by a publisher, and their sequels bring minor improvements but on the whole - suck and are full of bugs. These days there are more patches for games than there are positive updates. Jeez they sell the updates to u now in some cases, rebadge them as episodes - with more bugs - sometimes with ones they initially ironed out b4!!

.. rant continues ..

Best point yet tbh. Look at the valve hardware survey (closest thing i can think of too give a snapshot of the gaming communities hardware)and see how many people are running Axps, GF 6600s and are still on 512/1GB of ram still.

Try and get their PC to run a scene with 100x as much in it.

Get onto Project Reality the BF2 mod, every new mod involves a physics update of some sort, or a correction to how the ound is in real life.

Smash through a wall and it crumples, doesn't come away in blocks, the fences detach themselves at the hinges, and I think they are trying to replicate real life trajectory of bullets and missiles, so the firther away the more the "drop" in the bullet / round.

Its one of the reasons why I have not played any other games lately.

It doesn`t exactly take 100x the work to do better job.

It may look 100x better, and give the impression it does 100x the work.

But a simple jerk in how u do things can make the world of difference. 100 cells on a fence (as opposed to 1), a million cells on a character - there`s not alot in it.

Shoddy!

I want crumbling blocks ! Not excuses !

:p

valv ebuilt their own engine for physics? that was the big hoo-ha with it wasnt it? i'm sure they didn't use havoc? i could be wrong though lol
