Car insurance.

Right so next year (yeh long way off I know.) Im going to be learning to drive and hopefully have it nailed before my 22nd b'day as a nice little present to myself. So have been looking around at cars ect ect as you do and found a couple that I quite like for around £1300 which is fine and dandy now were not talking anything that has a v10 more like a 1.2/1.3. (corsa/golf as im after something that looks half decent and yes I understand it'll most likely get scratched and dinged but again I want it to look half decent and be reliable as I'll be doing some long non motorway trips in it.)

So how on earth do insurance company's get to charge you 5k+ for a years insurance fully comp and the same for third party ( not that Id go that way).

Now I understand Im a first time driver but come on talk about making it hard.

And it gets even worse if I go for a brand new car sure I can afford the repayments but the 9k insurance bill for the year takes the ...

I understand why insurance is there and why it costs so damn much, just wish not all new drivers were seen as chavs that want a bottle of nos attached to them at the hip.

And no, I don't believe on putting a parent/family member on the policy as they wont ever be driving it and it feels wrong.

try out aviva mate my lass just passed her test is 22 and has a dihastu charade 1.3lxi (no the best car but its got motly all electrical things) and she got 3rd party for a year for £650 from aviva

everywhere were quoting her £1000+ easily

females are cheaper to insure though, cheapest place i have found is elephant.co.uk, i'm 20 and can get insured on 1.6 fiesta for like 1.3k where as the rest were over 2k. I have been driving for nearly 2 years now though but don't have any years claims yet. I don't have that car but thats what it was when i was looking a few months back, i only paid 170 quid for this year on my sisters car helping her fund it for a year and i get a years no claims with that

Look for a list of the cars in insurance groups

Go for a car in groups 1-3

use all the compare sites, mess with your settings, bend truth where possible (stuff like could you park it on a driveway if needed?)

I got mine down using admiral multicar in the end, but you really will just have to check through them all, tweak settings, fully comp is usually cheaper for me and you get more

put a high (HIGH!) excess if you will never claim for your own car (using your policy) - this doesnt mean you have to pay the excess to pay for damage to other parties, just your own (if it was your fault)

and errrrr

I put my gran, mum and myself on my car, they hardly/wont use it but it knocked off £200

Get a diesel Pug 406. They'll go on for 250-300k miles and they cost chips to buy, run and insure. Aim at sort of 2002-2004 which are the newer ones. Insuring a 2.0 diesel with 100 bhp is about the same as insuring a ticket to a festival of plastic death which a Corsa is so it's a bit of a no-brainer. You also get the benefit of 4 doors and a big boot. And if you ding it here and there? Throw it away, it's not like you'll care anyway.

PS: They're like ins group 7-9 depending on spec levels.

For my 1st year of insurance, I did have my bro as the policyholder and me as the named driver - He did occasionally use it, but this is known as 'fronting'. As long as you don't be stupid when reporting a claim to the insurance, they will never know and can't prove it.

Use the aggregator sites - compare the market etc

Adding low risk drivers onto your policy as named drivers does bring it down.

Increase voluntary excess (bear in mind there will be a compulsory and young driver excess)
