Build log: OTD - 1000D

That is some proper engineering. Well done.

Thanks, but I'm really not liking the bulkiness of it all. Testing a complete shrink down now. Hopefully its just as effective and not as blocky. This time instead of using someone elses model, im making my own.

Simplicity all the way!

You still need a few more for maximum cooling:

I'm sure If TTL wanted to donate all those, I would have space in the case to make it all fit :D. But would need to bolt it down so it doesnt take off.

Revision 1 to simplify the idea

I've still been brainstorming and focussing on the front fan tray. Taking the premade one previously and trying to make it more appealing. So far my attempts have caused the frame to lose the rigidity of the original design.

Not going to give up however as its still good practise for me measuring parts and designing on the fly. Very fun.

Started with this design and worked from there.

First issue i see which is a limitation on my printer skills is having the logo protruding from the base lacked accurate details. So I decided to cut into the base intead. furthermore, I didnt like seeing empty gaps between the fans so wanted them covered up.

Behold version 2.

Also in white

I toyed with the idea to use an ironing technique for the top layers, but they were not to my liking. What I have noticed is the finished/texture of the PLA thats in contact with the build plate has no lines, or less signs its a 3D print, so i flipped the connector upside down on the printer.

Also attempted to print the interior logo with white PLA. and tried one pair face up and one pair face down so see how the finish looked

printing face down gave a much nicer finish.

My next problem is the sticker on the back of these fans being orientated at different angles. So I wanted to make these uniform and even. Since I haven't decided which way up the fans will be yet (depends on routing of wires) I'll add the next steps after its assembled.

Using the same logo I created some Corsair fan discs

As they were only 1mm thick, cutting the logo into the print didnt look right so I opted for making the logo cut right through the design.

That leaves the hideous corsair stickers still visible. I figured I would leave it on and instead find a way to cover it. Decided on some mirror vinyl I still had from a while ago.

As you can see the disc is slightly too small. So I have since reprinted them all 1mm wider (not pictured)

Those are really cool. Such neat little touches that really make a mod great.

Thanks :)

It's surprising how long I'm taking trying to get this right. My problem right now is the cable routing. Trying to run the cables between the fans extends the overall length so it doesnt fit between the rails.

Need to get everything handled with the fans, then redo the end blocks and shorten them to the length that allows me to attach the whole unit into the rail. Having cables wedged between fans extends the overall length by 0.8mm so it bows when I try to fit it.

More to come soon!

Still fine tuning the front 8 Fan tray.

Its taken a while because I couldnt get the centre point to align with the middle line between the fans. It just didn't look right before. It was a pain designing the Top fan connector to follow the contour of the ML120s rubber corners. I had to go around them in order for the piece to sit flat.

Printed in White for contrast and holes are missing the countersink but I'm not sure I'm keen on the Corsair text. Opinions?

Perhaps leave it blank, or use the Sails instead? Finished product will be in black

I really wanted to make them only 1mm thick so it would sit perfectly flush with the height of the rubber corners, but then I instantly lost alot of strength in the bracket once it was screwed down, and bowed upwards.

When I am finally done with the fan tray and all fits well, I'll probably upload all pieces to thingiverse.

I like the lettering. Maybe fill it with black paint or similar for contrast?

Letting did appeal to me. Amazing what you can find when searching for SVG logos. Sadly white doesnt fit the whole theme. This one was just a test. And its also the back side which you won't see. I have redone it in black but I'm still playing with the design on the fan connectors at the moment.

I tried printing the text with white PLA. Unfortunately I only have a 0.4mm nozzle so I cannot get the details of the lettering accurate enough to pop in there.

I usually like a minimalistic look so I might just keep the lettering discreet and as it is, just everything in black. But I do like the idea of white letting for contrast. Just need to try to achieve it.

Pics to be posted soon.

Made a Temporary GPU support block since my card is so heavy the IO shield sags
I stressed the print by going fast which is why the 2080 text is a little bit of a failure.

Onwards to the fan tray.

I think I am almost satisfied with the final version now. Just a little comparison of where I started and where I ended up. There were countless variations inbetween and failed attempts. But here we are. (excuse the poor quality. Late night and bad lighting)

Centre connections from left to right, the first one downloaded from Thingiverse, then my variations.

The Top and bottom connectors which attach to the fan rail blocks. I opted for a nice all in one solution.

Side connections to provide good stability.

However, I wasnt happy with visible screws. I tried for a more clever design, but the prints just were not possible with the current nozzle size I have.

What I did do though is to use screws for the hidden side, and then choose a nice smooth finish for the interior view.

So here we are with one side. Screws all over the place to give it some true strength.

And the side which will be visible inside the case, considered as Pinned and "screwless"

I also opted for just one Corsair text. In addition to that I kept the very central piece coloured with the White sails, but left the top and bottom ones in black. I may fill them at a later date. It took about 2 hours to fit the printed sails inside.

It doesn't stop there however. No one likes the reverse side of fans, with their specs and brand jargon stuck on the centre. I chose to hide this.

They aren't fixed permanently yet as I hadn't decided on the orientation of the fan cables in each position.

I also made a small attempt at a little glamour for the front side hub points. As there is a little corsair sail there hollowed out. I made sure I left a recess for some vinyl

No idea how it will turn out inside the case, but I am hoping some white lighting shining throughout the interior will give it a little gleam.
