Broadwell-e or wait for skylake-e

Hey all,

As some may or may not know but I'm currently considering upgrading to x99 format.

I was thinking rampage 10 edition paired with 6850k but was wondering if it's worth holding out for skylake-e etc.

Views?

All you really need to do is look at the Broadwell I5, then compare it directly to the Skylake I5 and you will see what Skylake E will have over Broadwell E (probably about 5%).

IMO buying any X99 set up will last you for donkeys years. Zen is supposedly around the same, so would be no upgrade either.

Skylake e will probably be late next year.

They will be in no rush unless Xen is barnstorming next year.

Cheers Guv,

Ahh I don't think I could hold the trigger got that long tbh..

But looking at the review you did on the 6xxx CPUs there's not a lot between those and Haswell-e so I'm guessing the same can be said for skylake-e unless they aim it towards new mobo'a with PCIe 4.0 I've seen people talk about.

But that being said I'll stick with broadwell-e.

If Skylake E comes out on X99 (no reason not to but hey, it's Intel) then they should be backward compatible with Broadwell E, meaning if you really wanted that new stuff you could change motherboards.

Saying that though what you put in this rig will probably not even go close to maxing out the PCIE bandwidth any way, meaning it's no great loss.

Yeah I guess so :)

Im keeping it simple... Just adding another 980ti and a m.2 SSD and that's it so your probably right.

Just wanted a board and CPU to last.

Oh you'll be fine fella. Kaap is running four Titan XPs from PCIE3 and he's not saturated it yet :D

Going any Intel X socket always lasts dude. TBH had I kept my X58 board I would probably be rocking a £50 hex core Westmere and would be perfectly happy with it.

Remember, with Zen AMD are trying to match Broadwell E, not better it. That may come later when they improve their process (like it did with Vishera coming from Bulldozer) but yeah, for right now all they are trying to do is match Broadwell E and with Intel's "tick tock" process it could be years before they come up with something new that is faster than just continually shrinking their existing designs.

I have a couple of PCs running Rampage 10 edition paired with 6950Xs, I really like Broadwell E and find it a lot more solid and bug free than Haswell E was when it launched.

I can really mess around with things like memory settings on Broadwell E and it will forgive me if I push it too far by just rebooting for a restart. If I tried the same on Haswell E when it launched it would mean several hours trying to get the system to run again.

I suspect that when Skylake E turns up it will be full of bugs but the fanboys will still tell you it is the greatest ever. New tech does take a while to settle down and to get all the bugs out.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'll stick with my original plan then get the 6850k and rampage 10.
I'm now undecided on SLI 980ti or be patient and get a 1080ti and have a beast single card solution as I have read about SLI issues.

Can you not afford a Titan XP?

To be honest yes I could :) but I like the idea of the 1080ti just because it should be cheaper (not by much I know) and company's like asus and evga get more freedom for factory overclocks etc with the 1080ti.

Plus I already have a custom loop so would be watercooled either way so would have to buy a new water block etc then have to try sell the old 980ti and water block etc hence why I was just gonna add a second 980ti

Forget factory overclocks if the 1080ti ever turns up, the Pascal Titan is just as good at overclocking as the non reference 1080s.

If NVidia position the 1080ti between the 1080 and Pascal Titan spec wise it is going to be a huge overpriced disappointment. The Pascal Titan is about 30% faster than a 1080 which leaves very little room to squeeze a 1080ti into. And remember the normal 1080 is already overpriced so there will be no bargains with a new 1080ti.

Adding a second 980ti is next to pointless in the dictionary mate. Honestly, SLi just doesn't work any more. I could sit here and list off all of the games where it doesn't work but there's no point, just add every game released in the past year or so. It really is a dire situation but has happened since the new "console ports" came out. They're now easier than ever to do, so even less work goes into making them work on a PC hence no AFR support whatsoever.

IMO having water is the reason why I would buy a T XP. They really sing under water.

Nvidia will not release a 1080ti until AMD have something to compete with. And that could be next year. Even if they do release it now what do you think it will cost when 1080s go up to £750+? You're looking at £900 if they launch it now IMO.

Lots of people think the 1080ti will be faster too, can't see that happening either. The 1070 is slower than the 970 was compared to the 980 and they have done this to create a clear gap between products. Why would you sell a £900 GPU when you can get £1100 for it?

I dunno man. Me? I would go Titan. They have a longer shelf life than any other GPU.

I'm now being torn in multiple directions aha

The titan xp does seem to be the path to go down considering the performance, it's a animal!

The cost isn't really a issue, wouldn't take long to gather the extra funds, my only concern is ideally i don't want to stuck with the old gear but don't really see anyone buying it lol

But tbh I'm moving again soon so i will probably strip, clean and box up all the bits I want to sell and hope I get some interest.

I dunno it's a tough one.

Another question for you guys....

If I aim towards getting the Titan XP would I be better off going with the 6800k instead of 6850k?

The reason I ask is if I go titan it's extremely unlikely il get a second titan or buy another gpu ever lol so the extra PCIE lanes and extra £££ ain't really needed.

Would that make sense?
