hey guys i have moved into a shared house to save money and the router is in the bottom front room and i am in the top back room and the house is quite long say longer than a normal terrice lol.

so on my netbook i get 1-3 bars and is very intermitent (drops between) now its a superhub 2 i think i dont no it has the virgin media logo on the bottom that lights up blue and u can push it in (never had virgin before lol)

anyway is there something i can get to boost the signal?

Have you tried this?

Seriously though, like Snortan said, powerline adapters are probably your best bet. On the downside (potentially), with a wired connection, the wireless connection gets worse for everybody else, so your housemates mightn't be best pleased. I live in a shared student house, and if anybody connects via ethernet, the WiFi for everybody else is terrible, but that might be our landlord's cheapo internet lol.

Edit: Oh my mistake, the method in the video doesn't increase the range, only the speed, never mind then.

That's most likely due to the cheap router :).
The "superhub" router isn't the greatest in the world, but I don't see it having that kind of problem.

I don't think it is due to that. I was suffering from the same problems until I purchased a top quality router.

I've always used Netgear with no problems, but I recently switched to TP link when I changed to fibre and I'm loving their stuff. Very impressed.

so its powerline not powerline with wifi i need?

its a big house so i dont no if it will be on the same circuit ring

I've got some Devolo ones i picked up from PC world which do the trick for me. nothing fancy, but its only for surfing the web.

Depends on what you want, I got just normal powerlines because i had no intention of using the wifi so there was no point on paying the extra price.
Damn, I just noticed the powerlines I posed above are normal ones, no wifi, sorry.

Wifi Repeaters are also an option but I've never used one so can't comment on how good they are, but the reviews seem positive.

At maplin, there is a bundle of tp link powerline plugs in a blue box, they are 59.99 but they are on offer on the web for 49.99 code A85LQ you get a wifi plug a normal non through plug one and a through plug one.

you can use the non through plug one as a relay and give your self better speed and the wifi plug immediately turns its self into an access point for the original router.

I only mention them as i see them everyday and use over the mains networking. hope that helps

And repeaters in my opinion are not worth the money as yes they boost signal strength but your dropping speed to the point it may not be worth it

Who pays for the package?

I noticed yesterday there is a "Wi-Fi Booster" pack for Sky, I think it's like £5 a month, don't know if it works but Virgin might have something similar?

Don't want to steal the thread.......

I'm getting VM 60mb line, end of January, and they say the can set it up in any room in the house.....

my plan was to have it installed in the master bedroom where it would be 5m from both of the computers, and have it connected via Ethernet cable/s...

being not very well educated in the wireless tech... reading a few posts here suggests that I could have it installed downstairs in the front room and just get a decent router.....but I prefer a cable connection and surely the need for an additional router is pointless? (being a noob I know)

I would always choose wired connection over wireless if possible, even if it means to make a bit of a mess with ethernet cables or powerlines if the cable needed is too long/messy.
One thing to keep in mind if you're gonna install it in the bedroom, close to the bed, is that you may notice a weak high pitched noise coming from the router, which is by no means unbearable but it annoys me. Or it could just be that I have a faulty unit:lol:.
If you're not gonna rely on wireless too much then the so called superhub will be just fine and there is no need for another router.

The wireless part will just be for mobile phone usage viewing YouTube. accessing the forum will be still done on my phones carrier connection....

best to play it by ear
