Just wondering whats the best place to get a cheap used car.. im looking at around £500-£1000.. Will be first car, only has to last me a year and abit.

Don't go to a dealer.

Check the free-ads and the local paper's for sale section.. Ideally what you want is an old person who doesn't know the value of what they've got..

£800 once bought me a stunning MK3 Golf, all because the girl selling it had massive student loans to pay off.. Shop around, and learn to haggle!

I knwo this may sound wierd but it makes perfect sense if you take care of your stuff. They more exspensive your first car is the least likely youll wreck it.

Some general advice about car shopping.

If searching online watch out for scams... A common car one is to sell it very cheap and say you have to use their shipping company/escrow site. If its too cheap it's a scam.

Oh, if you have any doubts about it you can drop me a PM, i scam bait as a hobby so am pretty good at spotting them.

Hmm, if you go to a dealer, ask for the lowest price they can give you on a car, say your asking around all the dealers and the lowest one gets your money, no haggling, just taking the best price. That's a lie, always go back round saying that a different company offered you £50 or less than the best deal.

Always be prepared to walk away. If a seller really thinks you want a car, they have the upper hand.

Also, with the credit crunch coming, it's pretty much a buyers market.

Aye yeh first car straight off passing.. *fingers crossed* .. Im aiming for a banger, its only to last me a couple of years if that..

Cheers for the advice.. If youve got any friends wanting to sell a car cheap.. shoot me a PM

Don't purchase cars from carcraft :P... Watchdog did a review on them, apparently quite a few cars are naff :o. People have been scammed and not given what they have paid for.

Well if we are giving advice make sure the car doesn't have any outstanding debt from HP and obviously do the HPI check (although I'm beginning to wonder if they are worth it. My mate just had hios audi S3 repo'd by the po-lice because the guy who sold it to him paid the origonal owner with a bank transfer, the origonal owner realeased the car before the bankers draft cleared and... Yup it bounced. They can't find the seller my mate bought it from but they found his car. Sucks. Hopefully it all works out.)

ring up your nearest motor auctions and ask them what night is banger night, prices go between £25-£1ooo.They all have them,If your not very mechanically(sp) minded then find someone who is and take them with you.

EDIT:there is a branch of "approved car finance" near you, ring them and ask where they send the p/x's.The cars they sell at the auction will be well within your budget

best advice I can give is shop local, papers, loot, trader etc.....

or walk in to dealers and ask if they have any part ex's they want shut off as it for cash no warranty implied....

or tell everyone you know you are after one, we always look for a cheap 2nd motor this way and more often than not, someone knows someone who's got a new car coming of Friday and needs to off load their old car sharpish and it's a lovely runner and well looked after etc.... you get the picture :D

Hire Purchase i believe.

It's when you basically buy it in instalments, and until it's fully paid off, it's only hiring.
