Backdoor trojan

I don't have a windows dvd.

I tried right-click format on the drive and it keeps saying , 'Windows cannot format this drive. quit any disk utilities or other programs that are sing this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive

I don't have anything else open. I went to task manager and there is a serious amount of processes that shouldnt be there. Most of them are system, which are the ones i cant end.

That wipe program we talked about earlier - i dont understand the options. It says something about strings 0-8 or somethin i'm like

If you don't have a windows disk do you have a Dell restart disk or similar?

If you have neither then there will be no way to reinstall windows after you format. Just in case you don't fully understand, the term format means completely wipe your hard disk, that means that windows will be wiped also. Hence the reason you cannot format your windows drive from within windows :)

I suggest that you either borrow a windows disk off a friend, or get in contact with dell to see if they can send you a recovery disk (which is a windows disk but often they lock their hardware so it will only work with their own bas****ised version of windows).

Oh sorry mate i do have the windows xp home stuff. I thought you meant a blank dvd or something. D'oh. I will give it a go

I want to keep the computer quite the same as it was for my dad or he'll be angry ^^ He likes using the bookmarks feature in mozilla so i'm gonna have to make a copy of these. I've looked through the mozilla files and can't find files that look like the bookmarks themselves. Any ideas? I coulnd't just write them all down and re-enter them cos there are hundreds

go into bookmarks manager and click file > export

back this file up

to import the file click file > import

Thanks man. Backing up files downstairs as we speak. New pc arrived today WOOOHOOO :D

I'll post specs while i'm waiting.

A successful wipe and re-installation of Windows Xp, thank you.

Now i can't get internet working. The computer isn't picking up the router or something. The driver software i have with the Belkin router only has a guide to installing it and not any wizards or anything. I've been through this router configging before, trying to connect an old netgear one for weeks. Can anyone help me before i go insane

Is your computer wired or wireless? If wireless you MUST get the drivers installed for your NIC. If you are wired, Windows should have loaded the appropriate drivers for your NIC, if not again you need to install the drivers for for your specific NIC.

You shouldn't have to mess with any options on your router at all to get your computer reconnected to the network. More than likely your LAN router is setup to be DHCP enabled, in which case once you get the drivers for your NIC your computer will automatically configure itself to work properly with the network and get you online.

You can check to see what drivers still need to be installed by going to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager : Anything with a ? by it needs drivers, make sure your NIC isn't one of them.

Hi mate. The computer is wired to the network. There isn't anything in the taskbar which is quite strange. I remember when i got the network installed before i entered an ip adress into mozilla and the configuration page came up. I had to set up PPPOE settings etc. My ISP settings had to be entered and all, you're saying this shouldnt have to be done again? After a reformat everything was wiped. I've looked in device manager. Under modems, a 56000mbps modem and 56k one show. There are no question marks beside either of them and i don't think the 56000mbps one is the right one, i think it may be default or something. Is there any programs that i can download to set up the internet on the computer quickly?

Thanks

I've followed this too ( at the bottom of the page ).

When i type 'ipconfig' in cmd prompt it just says:

Windows IP configuration - obviously i don't have an ip adress yet.

When i type in the given ip (192.168.2.1) on the browser to access the configuration IE just prompts 'connect' or 'stay offline' and doesnt lead me to it. As i've said before the CD with the router doesn't contain a setup application, only an Adobe pdf manual. When following the manual nothing works as i need to access the config through the browser.

The other two computers on the network are connected to the net perfectly. Would my best option be to download some kind of software? Is it just windows that's making this difficult for me?

In device manager do you have "network adapters", and under there does it show any network adapters/network interface cards (NIC's).

Do you have a my network places icon on the desktop?

Start|Settings|Control Panel|Network Connections, what does it show here?

No i don't have "network adapters".

In 'other devices' i can see Ethernet controller, multimedia, SM bus, video etc with yellow ?'s beside them.

In network connections there's a default broadband connection, doesn't look right. It's a WAN miniport PPPOE, when i rightclick and connect it tries to dial and doesn't open port. So that's a no-go. I've tried that given ip address from the belkin website on this (my) computer and it opens up the config ok.

I'm starting to think maybe it's the network card on the computer not picking up the router because drivers for the card haven't been installed? I can't find anymore cd's for re-installation, apart from the 3 or 4 i've already looked at. Would the driver for the network card not be included in the Windows xp dvd package?

The yellow ?'s in device manager indicate that you haven't installed drivers for the network card aka "Ethernet controller".

Most motherboards come with a driver CD, do you have that CD?

If not, what brand/model of motherboard is it? You can likely download the required drivers from the manufacturers website.

What you want to do is find all the drivers, install them and make sure all the yellow ?'s are gone.

WOOOOT :D I'm so happy

Ok so i got one of the driver cds ran it, downloaded network adapter software for the network card, installed it and BOOM HEADSHOT www.google.com opened straight away.

woohooo :D

Thanks for your help, now i can relax on my 1 day old super machine and do some gaming before school on monday!
