I'll probably end up doing something like that, but I'll end up needing more than 2 SSDs for sure, just because of how big some projects are, and I want my boot and programs drive to be separate from my video drive. But I'll probably go all SSDs inside the workstation itself, and then build an expandable nas of some sort so I can add space when ever I need. Something with an Intel Gigabit line, and maybe two lines teamed if I need it.I think the best idea would be to go with a couple of SSDs and just a 3TB backup drive. Then a little server or NAS for actual storage.
2x SSDs, 3TB WD Black - then a server or NAS.
I'm not trying to be rude when I say this, I promise you... But I beg to differ. I'm going to start production on a film soon, and when it's all said and done, it's gonna be anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 hours long. All of the raw unedited footage for that is gonna be ridiculous, and I'm honestly afraid to see how much it ends up being... but it will surely be under 2tb... I hope.Your 'recent projects' aren't really going to take up anywhere near 3TB of storage anyway.
Yeah, I've still got my RIVE... but two of those SATA are from a 3rd party (marvel) chipset. I've heard using those for raid 0 on SSDs is a bad idea, just because it's slowed down and not as good as the Intel chipset or a quality raid card.As for the SATAs, I'm not sure what you're saying? There are X79 boards that have 4 SATA 6 ports? The RIVE for example (don't you have one?). Why can't you use that?
Yeah, the threads would make a difference. I'm gonna be using a pair of 780's for GPU acceleration for rendering though, so I figured the CPU couldn't play as big of a role in rendering. If I'm missing something, then as far as rendering goes, there will be a bit of difference between the 3930k and the 4770k, as the 3930k has 4 more threads, which rendering programs will make use of.
As for what I'm gonna do, I'll probably get the 750D like Tom (and maybe others) mentioned before. I'll just use the SSD mounts that are built in, or get some velcro. I've gotta keep my 3930k, because I totally forgot about how much PCI-e bandwidth I need, so I'll end up using a nice raid card for the SSDs.
